Peace Mom coming to Mount Greenwood

Tuesday, January 31, 2006

By Jonathan Lipman
Staff writer
Nationally known peace activist Cindy Sheehan will speak in Chicago's Mount Greenwood community at Saint Xavier University next month.

Sheehan was invited to speak by the school's student activities board and will give a lecture titled "One Person Can Make a Difference, Not One More."

"The students saw her as somebody out there in the media taking a stand against the war, and I think that was attractive to them," said the university's vice president for student services, John Pelrine. "I think it's the kind of thing you should be doing on a college campus."

Sheehan will speak at 7 p.m. Feb. 16 at the school's Shannon Center, 3700 W. 103rd Street.

Sheehan's son, U.S. Army Specialist Casey Sheehan, was killed in action in Iraq. Sheehan became famous during her weeks-long protest outside the Texas ranch of President George Bush in August 2005.

Pelrine said he's not sure what kind of reception the so-called "Peace Mom" will get.

"Her agent has told us it's typical for her to get a couple hundred people (per lecture)," Perline said. "But with everything that's been in the paper recently, who knows?"

Sheehan recently announced that she is considering a run for the U.S. Senate. On Sunday, Sheehan joined with leftist Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez in a joint statement condemning Bush.

The university is taking the usual security precautions it does for a visit by any celebrity, but Pelrine said he did not expect trouble. Students have so far held no demonstrations in support of or opposing the war.

"I think it will be interesting to see if this generates any," Pelrine said.

Tickets for the event are free to university faculty, students and staff. All others pay $5. For tickets, call (773) 298-3138.

1) Stand in line.

2) Huge wad of chewing tobacco in mouth.

3) Get close & spit!

4) Bow to applause.

Bob,
Part of me wants to go to this liberal charade, but most of me wants to be the 7.6 miles(figured on Google Maps) away from this train wreck.  If I spit on her I'd likely get arrested.

It doesn't bother her any. Must not be that bad.

I'm going to use a joke folks here have used on me:

"She needs to go BACK IN HER TRUNK!" and lock her in and never let her out!

Like the vet who recently spit on Hanoi Jane, it will be worth it, IMO.

She's being detained at the Capital right now.  Maybe she'll be late to your college?

Not the college I attend, and as I said at the beginning of the thread, my bet is she won't be going...

As far as my particular college goes, surprisingly I haven't seen any liberal activity, save for some PETA nut cakes at the school last year, and a write up in the student paper about a girl that went to DC to go to a Sheehan march/rally.

I'd like to point out this particular gem of a quote:

"The students saw her as somebody out there in the media taking a stand against the war, and I think that was attractive to them," said the university's vice president for student services, John Pelrine. "I think it's the kind of thing you should be doing on a college campus."

That's what we need, more liberal leftist whackos in the world... CAN YOU SMELL THE SARCASM?

Oh and BTW-I'd like to echo  the sentiments said by a poster here in a different thread about how she has COMPLETELY disrespected what her son wanted to accomplish in IRAQ.

I hope she's completely proud of herself.

Not worth going to see, IMO.  She came to UMD last semester and I went to see what the hoopla was about, and was rather unimpressed.  She strucke me as a rather ill-informed mouthpiece, a useful idiot.  Her one qualification to speak was the 'greiving mother' thing.  She did say that her son re-evaluated his stance on the war after seeing its effect in Iraq, and that he no longer believed in the goal.  Perhaps she was being truthful, perhaps dishonest.  We'll never know, as dead men tell no tales.  Overall, going to see her speak was a waste of time.

I'm constantly saddend, however, by the vitriol spewed in her general direction by members of this site.  Her goals are in opposition to those generally favored by the populace here, but some of the stuff I see would make the uninitiated think that she's worse than Mao.

Quite frankly I'd rather dive into a tub of scorpions before I went to see her.

Shit, don't even justify her existance by going.  She is irrelevant, the fewer people that show up the better.
