Nationally known peace activist Cindy Sheehan will speak in Chicago's Mount Greenwood community at Saint Xavier University next month.
Sheehan was invited to speak by the school's student activities board and will give a lecture titled "One Person Can Make a Difference, Not One More."
"The students saw her as somebody out there in the media taking a stand against the war, and I think that was attractive to them," said the university's vice president for student services, John Pelrine. "I think it's the kind of thing you should be doing on a college campus."
Sheehan will speak at 7 p.m. Feb. 16 at the school's Shannon Center, 3700 W. 103rd Street.
Sheehan's son, U.S. Army Specialist Casey Sheehan, was killed in action in Iraq. Sheehan became famous during her weeks-long protest outside the Texas ranch of President George Bush in August 2005.
Pelrine said he's not sure what kind of reception the so-called "Peace Mom" will get.
"Her agent has told us it's typical for her to get a couple hundred people (per lecture)," Perline said. "But with everything that's been in the paper recently, who knows?"
Sheehan recently announced that she is considering a run for the U.S. Senate. On Sunday, Sheehan joined with leftist Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez in a joint statement condemning Bush.
The university is taking the usual security precautions it does for a visit by any celebrity, but Pelrine said he did not expect trouble. Students have so far held no demonstrations in support of or opposing the war.
"I think it will be interesting to see if this generates any," Pelrine said.
Tickets for the event are free to university faculty, students and staff. All others pay $5. For tickets, call (773) 298-3138.
