and caught a skunk instead.

Well, shit.  Now what?

And it's too close to the house to "kill it with fire", which was my first idea.....

Walk up to it slowly and cover it with a dark sheet or towel.  Stay calm and so will it.  If the trap is fairly tight he wont be able to raise and spray.  Walk him away from the house and execute in whichever manner you see fit.

We used to catch skunks in live traps, once caught we would a blanket over it, walk it to end of the dock, and drop problem solved and no smelly mess.

I know it sounds mean, but if you shoot them they tend to release the stink, after dying.

Toss it in the nearest water and drown it.

Walk up to it slowly and cover it with a dark sheet or towel.

Carefully place a UPS delivery sticker in it and call for a package pick up.

Post the film on YouTube.

I was going to suggest covering it, and dropping it in a 55 Gal drum of water.
