I have a scope for sale on another board. Guy says he's from Italy and would like to buy it- 25-30 year old Colt 4x carry handle scope-has a bullet drop cam on it etc...... Am I prohibited by ITAR from selling it to him?

The rules I have seen say "military rifle scope" essentially. What the fuck does that mean exactly? Sure, no Trijicon Acogs, nothing with a Mil Dot reticle etc.... As far as I know the Colt scope was never adopted by any military service etc...and is 20- 30 years old probably with a simple bullet drop cam.

When in doubt, and the end result of doing the wrong thing is a possible stint in "Federal Pound Me In The Ass Prison," it's usually best to err on the side of caution.  You aren't going to jail by not selling it to him, but there is the chance you could go to jail if you do.  I think the choice is quite obvious.

Sights and scopes built to "military specifications" are controlled by ITAR.  The Colt scope was an issue item at one point, wasn't it?

I have read the list of articles that are covered by ITAR. Military scopes and civilian scopes are on the list. Anything that you can imagine that is gun related is on the list. Technically you can't send it to Italy. Probably a very small chance of getting caught.

Ive bought plenty of scopes of the years from the USA.

Strangely the catsh seem to be that it was once fielded by the .mil so it might be a no-no.

Personal rant here. A long time ago I bought one of the first scopes Trijicon ever produced (not ACOG), in other words I supported a great US company at a very early stage. When I wanted to replce the Tritium is was not possible to send ik back to Trijicon anymore because of ITAR. I also could not order a new scope from the USA any more and thus spent my money buying European. I can understand wanting to guard sensitive tech but some things are just retarded.

How much for the scope $200.00, $600.00,$1000.00 .The lawyer fee's will be much more and all the bullshit you will have to go through if caught. Not worth it at all in my opinion !!!
Put it on Gunbroker or the EE.and be done with it. Unless you have been dreaming about all those hot steamy nights with Bubba in your cell of love.

Yea, I've pretty much decided it's not worth the potential bullshit.
