Just to get started let me start out with this ==> hat
I have the oppurtunity to buy a VERY nice and perhaps a chance of a lifetime fish for a reasonable price of $300. The fish, though common, is rare at the size of the one being offered. Before anyone asks why cant I buy one small and grow it out. Well because it takes them FOREVER to grow and in captiviy will most likely never attain this size.

Im in a time in my life where I cant afford both hobbies so I guess I have to choose. Now Im not getting rid of all my guns by any means, just my AR. I figure that since ARs are so common, that when/if funds allow I could always get another.

I asked this same question on a fish board and I want to compare awnsers on a gun bored! Here

Fish die.

ARs are forever.
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 7:43:52 PM EST
cheaper to buy a small fish, large tank and grow it yourself
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 7:44:12 PM EST
Well these guys do live 20+ years!
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 7:44:18 PM EST
Hand over your man card....now.

I know what its like to have more than one hobby. Five years ago I could give two shits about an AR. However, a fish will die, but your AR will be yours forever! MUHAHAHA!

Link Posted: 10/31/2006 7:45:10 PM EST
Like I said though it is impossible to grow these fish out to this size in captivity. Im a very experienced aquarist BTW so its not like Im going to kill the fish by being stupid!
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 7:46:08 PM EST
Man card?! Hehe look at the fish Im getting! That thing literrally has the ability to bite your hand off at the wrist!

It's also much more rewarding.
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 7:46:14 PM EST
Are you totally off your rocker or only partially?
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 7:46:46 PM EST
You're seriously considering selling an AR in order to buy...a fish.

Link Posted: 10/31/2006 7:47:06 PM EST
If the fish will make you happy, go for it.

I don't know that I'd have sold my AR to buy my bala sharks, but throught he winter I get more enjoyment watching the sharks than looking at the AR in the safe.

Wow this board kicks ass!! The replies come so fast its amazing!

Again though its IMPOSSIBLE to grow this fish out to that size. Even if it was it would take the better half of a decade.

It's because we have no lives and are putting off things we should actually be doing.
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 7:49:30 PM EST
Sell the AR.

If you are even asking, you should sell the AR.
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 7:49:38 PM EST
Just a little back ground of my self:

I get several tanks from small 10gallon tanks up to a 300gallon indoor pond and I specialize in large South American predatory fish such as piranhas and freshwater stingrays. I bet alot of you guys would enjoy it! I got started keeping preds when I decided to keep a small large mouth while fishing!
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 7:50:01 PM EST
for a HERRING!
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 7:52:54 PM EST
How do you plan to cook it?

judging from your posts, it sounds like you want the fish more than the AR. go ahead and get the fish.

ETA: use the leftover money after you buy the fish to buy a complete lower... you'll be halfway back to having an AR.
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 7:53:35 PM EST
It's a fish man , I don't understand you but if this fish is important to you buy it.
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 7:55:27 PM EST
Go with the fish! with lemon and butter!
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 7:57:00 PM EST
Yeah I think I will but like I said I was just curious to see the different replies from the different boards. Here it seems fifty-fifty and on the fish board I have a surprising # of poeple who think I shouldnt sell such a "cool" thing but they are probably just some 15 year old from Mass that dont know any better.

THe way I figure it, Id sell my AR for more then the cost of the fish so Ill still have some cash, plus Ill have a fish that there is perhaps less then a hundred in the entire country at this size where as there are most likely several hundred ARs in my county!

The owner is litterally scared to clean the tank with this guy in it!

Is that a piranha?

It makes a difference...

ETA: just read your post.

FISH!!!!!!

BTW, is you're buying that for $300 I need to get a fishing rod and move to Misiones.

Black Piranha?

how big is he?

I heard they get f'ing huge

I am piranhaless now

although i just had red ones
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 7:59:11 PM EST
Get some Peacock Bass or an Arowana. Much cooler.

I personally find most of the characin family rather dull.

Cichlids are more owner responsive.

As you already know there are a lot of really cool native North American predatory fish as well.

Like some one said I could sell the rifle get the fish and buy a lower to be halfway back. Or what if I sold my upper (CMMG M4 style) and kept my lower....hmmm...

What could I get out of a CMMG upper? Unfortunatly I dont have a round count on it so....

Kommisar,

I already have two peacock bass. Cichla Occelaris and my pride and joy Cichla Orinosis. I also have other fish such as Wide bar datnoids, bichirs, and so on....

Glock19,

This guy is a solid 14" possibly larger. I have or have kept all piranhas of the pygocentru genus including piraya. I have kept several Piranhas in the Serrasalmus genus including a Serrasalmus Brandtii except serrasalmus rhombeus (this one).
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 8:00:49 PM EST
this is a joke right??
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 8:03:50 PM EST
It's hard to judge how big it is from the pic. Exactly how big is it?

It sounds like the fish is a special thing in your hobby. So I would get that and get a new AR later.
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 8:04:02 PM EST
Get the fish, feed small animals (small children? Jk) from the surrounding neighborhood, post videos.
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 8:05:49 PM EST
The fish is 14" which is quite large. In the wild there are reports of 20" specimens. The largest in the U.S. that I know of is 17-18".

Friend of mine kept piranha in a glass tank...

Came home one evening and they had "made a break for it" so to speak. They had shattered the tank and were laying dried out on the floor.

If you get him, get a large tank and make sure that it's lexan not glass.
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 8:21:45 PM EST
Go with the fish. Oh and btw I LIKE MY CHARACINS!
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 8:24:00 PM EST
Some folks are born stupid and some have to work at it.

Keep up the good work.

So its a phallic thing for you.

Link Posted: 10/31/2006 8:27:32 PM EST
Tartar sauce or malt vinegar?
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 8:28:03 PM EST
A fish?

Short and simple, I would not be selling any firearm for a fish.

I do like the idea of a salt water aquarium, but not at the expense of my AR.
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 8:30:02 PM EST
Characins rock! I mean who doesnt want these guys in a fish tank?!

Surprisingly Im getting about the same awnsers on both boards...fifty-fifty either way.

It will be hard to sell my first AR but I figure there are less then a hundred fish like this in the country and what 10,000 ARs!

Now I do like the Idea of gett the SCAR and having both!
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 8:34:54 PM EST
What brands your ar? Might be interested in a stripped lower and upper.
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 8:36:35 PM EST
Its a like new <50 rounds essential arms lower with DPMS parts kit and a used CMMG upper.
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 8:39:33 PM EST
if you have more than 1 AR get the fish IMO

I miss having fish but it is nice to just be able to up and leave for days at time and not have anything at my aparment that I have to feed
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 8:41:35 PM EST
EA ? So it's a pre-ban vintage cast lower that wasn't factory assembled into a rifle...

Get the fish.

Link Posted: 10/31/2006 8:42:05 PM EST
So why is it you need a quarum to make a decision?

You want the fish, so, go get it.

Trade an AR for a fish and you eat for a day. Keep your AR and you can kill all the fish you want.
Link Posted: 10/31/2006 8:51:15 PM EST
When the zombies come that fish wont do you much good

My thoughts exactly.

It's an election year. Keep the AR.
