Well, my day started out in a wonderful way today. My friend calls me up on the phone asking me if I still have some decontamination tablets that he could use...
He was distraught when he called, and I was dumbfounded as to why the hell he'd want some decontamination pills, etc... He said as he went down into his underground parking ramp, he wasn't wearing his glasses, and saw a white glaze on his car. Being a 4.0 GPA geek (like I used to be) lacking all common sense he runs his finger through it thinking "did it frost last night?". He realized it wasn't frost, and it was powder! He looked around & saw all other cars with "University of Minnesota" stickers in their windows were also coated white!!! He was just going to a "Terrorist Awareness meeting to collect information on what to do if anything in the Metro Area happened...
So, me being the most prepared person he knows, he called me, and was terrified! I told him to call the police, and I'd be right over. I ran over there with my decontamination pills & my gas masks in a backpack. I doubted that this was really anthrax, because he said it was coating more than one car. It would be ***VERY*** difficult to acquire that much anthrax (I thought). So I went to check it out. It was frightening, because I thought it was a prank, but it DEFINITELY was a powder of some sort. The police arrived, and went in with me, I never took out a gas mask, because the police and I were both almost certain it couldn't be anthrax.
After searching around, I saw to parts of a plastic "clip" looking thing. The police were suspicious, but didn't tell us anything about what they thought it was. The bomb squad was called in to analyze the substance, but they never arrived in time (as far as I remember) to solve the mystery. It turns out the female officer found another part of the plastic wire-like clip, and it had a word on it. She called the bomb squad, to verify her suspicions, and it was true. The name on the tag was that of a company the refills fire extinguishers.
They did determine that it couldn't be sand, concrete, or anthrax due to sheer volume, and their portable lab showed a high concentration of carbon-like material in this powder... It was a powdery spray from a fire extinguisher. Some punk kids thought it would be cool to break into the parking ramp & spray the cars of U of MN students with a fire extinguisher.
I was impressed with their levels of shown intelligence and interest in the matter. They aren't all stupid like so many people think.
I was satisfied with how they handled the situation overall... Thanks Cops!!! [:D]
