A dash cam video from the officer who shot and killed Native American
woodcarver John T. Williams was released Friday, showing Williams
ambling slowly across the street in a crosswalk before the officer
opens fire.
Although most of the action takes place off-screen, Williams is seen
walking across the street in front of the patrol car in the video,
dated Aug. 30.

Birk's badge was later
pulled after a Seattle Police Department Review Board and Chief John
Diaz reached a preliminary finding that Williams' shooting was not
justified.

And I worked for years in Lakewood. My brother lives there. LPD is a good outfit.

When your policy is "Shoot first and ask questions later" could you at least be cool and ask some fucking questions later?

What that video doesn't tell me is whether the guy was turning towards the LEO or facing away. Was the knife open or closed? Was he turning in a threatening manner or not? Etc.  The tape, absent witness statements, autopsy reports, etc. doesn't show shit..

That said, the guy had a legal knife and autopsy says he wasn't facing the LEO when shot. Doesn't sound like a good shoot to me but I base it not on the tape, but the totality of the information available..

His own thin blue line ruled it a bad shoot, along with an autopsy showing he was shot at angles consistent with him NOT facing the officer.  How much more info do you need?

If you want to hold the line on this deal that's on you.  After two videos the only thing I can find that the Seattle cop did correctly was not saying anything about "beating the Mexican piss out of you" before dealing out the out-of-line punishment.

Those are only relevant AFTER the fact. The LEO had no way of knowing he was deaf and the hair (from what I can tell in the video) covered both his ears making it damn near impossible to tell if he had earbuds on... Had he known those facts BEFOREHAND, then they would be relevant.

Feel free to provide so much as a nanosmidgen of documented/reported/linked information to support one iota of what you've posted here. Aside from the "running the streets" part - I'll take you at your word on that.

And no, I'm in no way offering support for what is fairly obviously a bad shoot.

No you can't tell anything, but the usual cop haters don't need to see any video to say it was a bad shoot.  The ONLY thing the vid shows is a guy walking carrying something in his hand (Cant tell on video what it is but that doesn't mean you couldn't tell if you were there). The audio sounds like cop confronted the guy and guy refused to drop a knife. As for not facing officer when he was shot, its been proven time and time again that a person can turn around just before shots are fired, and doesn't mean the suspect wasn't a threat.

Without witnesses and other video it would be impossible to determine if it was a good shoot or not, unless you were there. I would like to know if the cop was answering a call on the guy.

all i got to say is...

what the fuck did the cop need to make contact with the guy for? was he a menace to the piece of wood with a folding pocket knife?

what i see here, is a guy walking down the street doing his hobby, and a cop with nothing better to do, choosing to get involved in a non-crime, and costing someone his life.

fuck THAT cop.

Knife was CLOSED when recovered. A picture was given to the media of the knife locked open the next day. Witnesses apparently report the man was not walking towards the officer when he was shot and had only looked over his shoulder at the officer.

I'm not gonna call this one, but I would not bet on the officer wearing a badge this time next year.
