A seaplane crashed and sank in Miami's main shipping channel today, killing at least six people, the US Coast Guard said.

The seaplane, which flies between downtown Miami and the Bahamas, crashed just off the southern tip of Miami Beach after taking off with 14 passengers and two crew on board, Coast Guard Petty Officer James Judge said.

"We have six bodies recovered so far," Judge said.

The other passengers and crew remain missing, Judge told CNN television.

He said the Coast Guard received its first report of the crash at about 2.30pm (0630 Tuesday AEDT).

The head of the Miami fire department later said at least seven people had been rescued.

Witnesses told local television the plane seemed to explode in the sky and fell into Government Cut, the entry to the Port of Miami, where it came to rest in shallow water next to a jetty.

"There was a huge explosion in the sky, a big ball of smoke," witness Frank Amadeo, told Miami's Channel 7 television.

"It just sort of spiralled downward," he added.

The Coast Guard said the channel was closed to ship traffic.

they are questioning if it may have been terrorism to. because people heard loud boom before it broke up.

and if this is a small airline they are raising the question did they have the same security precautions as normal airlines.ruh roh if they didnt since this type of plane was hjacked back in the 70's. it was on msnbc.com about that.

Just saw the video on the news.  The plane lost a wing.  The wing, engulfed in flames, hit the water after the rest of the plane.  The plane looked like it was still pretty much intact.
