When I hug my dog and pet her head, it offends her.

Some looney, lefty bitch told me so.

That look of happiness and contentment is really just fear and scorn :(

Dogs do have to learn to like hugs; they're not something instinctively attractive to dogs.  Dogs can perceive that act as threatening and really young kids typically want to hug dogs.

I've hugged dogs my whole life, different dogs and never have an issue.  Then again all dags think I'm cool as hell so it works out.

My dog will do head butts, she loves to put her forehead against mine, push slightly and then stay there for 20-30 seconds. Then she'll sigh and usually go lay down.

When my wife's mutt jumps up in my lap I give him a shiatsu massage.

After awhile he groans and then goes to sleep.

Duh, they had to do research to confirm this?

My dog spins in circles and literally smiles when i come home at night, he doesn't even get that excited when he gets fed. Theyre no where near our level of advanced intelligence but they certainly are capable of feelings, memories, learning, dreaming, etc...

Its not the act of hugging itself, its any act that could be perceived as an act of dominance. Of course it depends on the dog. Some dogs are Omegas naturally and expect to be dominated. Others not so much......but it is usually glaringly obvious. You dont need to be a dog whisperer to figure it out.

Mine does the same thing.  Great companions if raised/treated right.

Yep. Their emotions are a bit more primitive than what we have, but there for anyone with eyes and a brain to see. Love, fear, jealousy, sorrow, and on and on and on.

OP, several times a day my female GSD will come to me and lick me and rub her muzzle against my face tenderly.

Then she will go back to playing or whatever she was doing.

It's pretty obvious that she is not doing this because she HATES me.
