Is the M1 a good shotgun to get?  Any reason not to get one?

they are dead flat sexy and a little less expensive than the M4's.

I got one about a month back.  Paid $590 for it, it was a steal!  Great gun!  Nicely compliments an M4, btw.

It is the best shotgun you will ever own, period.

Yeah, definitely get one. Mine won't feed some lighter loads, but if you are using the proper loads, it will probably NEVER hiccup!

by light loads are you talking about the el'cheapo bulk loads from walmart?  Cause that's what I practice with.  Or are you talking about special "low recoil" or other type light loads?

Some people have commented that putting weight on them causes them to not function correctly.

What about a surefire forearm?

damn if found one for 590 I'd be all over that thing!  I'm looking at one for 780.00

If you find one for $600 it's stolen. It's a damn good shotgun but it likes high brass.

I own an M1 and an M3 two of my favorite shotguns. I use the regular loads for it no reduced recoil in mine. You will love this gun..

I have one of the old Hecker & Koch stamped (not made, just imported) M1 Tacticals.

Great gun.

The only downside is that, as mentioned, some of them are finicky with light loads.  Mine is not.  It has never failed on any load, reduced recoil or not.  And mine has the Surefire 617F weaponlight too.

Rule of thumb is to avoid hanging too much weight on the gun if you can avoid it.  Don't do a sidesaddle and a Surefire, one or the other should suffice.  If you must have both, buy the special recoil spring from Wolff Gunsprings to help (not solve) this problem.

had mine almost a year now and it has never had any problems firing light load.  it is one of the older H&K stamped models.  Very clean firing weapon due to the fact that there is no gas system.

this one is also an older HK stamped/imported model.  Is 780 average?  Good price? Bad?

Gunbroker lists them a little higher but I think most of the dealers on gunbroker are smoking crack.

If NIB, that's a good price.  Mine was $750 NIB but that was a CDNN closeout about ten years ago.

it's actually slightly used but looks basically brand new.  it's got the mag extender on it already as well.

I prefer the M4 Super90 myself.

The Benelli M1 is a damn fine shotgun though.

send me a PM and ill send ya pics of my M1S90 TACTICAL loaded with pistol grip, factory 4 shot mag extension, ghost rings, side saddle and Laser devices light forearm with Surefire light..never had one single problem even with the accessories. Ive always  shot heavy loads thru it and man its niiiiice. i purchased everything new and one at a time and have over $1500 in it..The best Benelli made is my M4 11707 with factory tube and adj stock. The M4 doesnt have the kick of the M1 b/c of the gas system vs inertia drive i guess but the M1 is a damn fine shotgun and you wont go wrong by buyin one.

I apparently have an older HK marked one too. Mine feeds everything. In fact, most of what I've put through it was wal-mart bulkpack.

Buy an M1. Or an M2. Or an M3. Or, if you have the money, an M4. Or a Nova/Supernova, if you're into pumps (or just strapped for cash).

Why? Because Benellis kick ass, that's why. Plain and simple.

The only modern/contemporary autoloading shotgun I will ever buy is a Benelli. (The only other being a Browning A-5, which isn't exactly "contemporary" these days)

Cleaner, simpler, and as long as you aren't a pussy (especially light loads) and don't pile unecessary tacticool bullshit on it, it'll run like nothing else. And on the subject of light loads - the only failures of Benellis I've ever personally witnessed involved SBEs or SBE2s - both of which have 3-1/2" chambers - with 1oz or lighter target loads. I have not experienced any failures with my Montefeltro - 3" chamber - with any of the light 1oz target loads I've used for years. It's the higher "magnum" models with 3-1/2" chambers which don't tolerate light loads as well - they are equipped to deal with a much heavier load, of course, and so it makes sense that they sort of "expect it".

I have an original pre-ban M1 Super 90.  It is a great shotgun with the following limitations:

1. mine is sensitive to light recoil rounds.
2. as recoil driven, your shoulder absorbs much more recoil than with a gas gun.

Other than that, it is the most reliable weapon I own.

My Beretta Urika cycles all three of the cheapo WalMart promo loads without a single problem. That was a priority of mine while shopping for an autoloader.  Tried Benelli, Browning, and Remington and all encountered problems.

It also cycles the Winchester AA light target loads which are 1145fps, 1oz, 8shot with no problems.

I am not a rich guy and being located in California, WalMart ammo is a godsend since the regular dealers want $5.99/box for their cheapos. WalMart ammo is the same price here and sometimes slightly cheaper than other states where my business travels take me. Speculating, I think it is a direct competitive attack on the CA FFL dealers who put alot of pressure on the CA-DOJ and the ATF to close WalMart gun sales down (they could not compete).

I shoot with some FFL dealers and know two who where involved with the reporting of violations of WalMart to get them out of the competitive arena here. Now they bitch, moan, and groan about WalMart's ammo pricing. They also want to go after Big 5 but most of the other FFL dealers are not interested at this point.

I bought a regular one with the 24" barrel for hunting/trick shooting. Best shotgun ever. I only feed it cheap bulk pack loads and it has never failed. Lightening fast.

Cool ... were I in the market for M1S90 I'd buy it.

If the gun has ghost ring sights, check to see which style.  The older (like mine) models had generic Benelli ghost rings.  The newer ones have ghost rings made by LPS (?).  I've never had problems with my ghost rings but supposedly the LPS sights are more sturdy.
