N.H. School Bans Photo of Pupil With Gun

By BEVERLEY WANG

LONDONDERRY, N.H. (AP) - The school board has voted to ban a photo of a student from the senior section of his high school yearbook because he is posed with a shotgun.

But Tuesday's unanimous vote also backed a compromise: Blake Douglass can have the photo published in a ``community sports'' section, and a new photo - without the gun but featuring other elements of skeet and trap shooting - can appear in the seniors' section of the Londonderry High School yearbook.

The compromise wasn't good enough for Douglass, who wanted his senior photo in traditional sportsman's pose, wearing an oxford shirt, navy vest and holding the shotgun over his shoulder.

``I don't see anything wrong with the picture,'' Douglass, 17 said at the hearing. ``I just want my senior picture in the yearbook.''

Last month the yearbook staff, adviser, principal and superintendent chose to bar the photo from the yearbook, saying the firearm was inappropriate.

Penny Dean, Douglass' lawyer, said she intends to file a complaint in U.S. District Court, and said the National Rifle Association will pay for the court case.

Dean cited a statement on student publications in the board's policy manual: ``We encourage the use of school sponsored publications to express students' points of view. They shall be free from all policy restrictions outside the normal rules for responsible journalism.''

I'm not surprised. Southern NH is full of hypocritical liberals who couldn't take the taxes and insane real estate prices in MA, so they moved to NH and have brought along their wacky ideas with them.

Double barrel skeet guns kill millions of babies every day.

Would we all be so aghast if he had an AR or AK over his shoulder?

This is old...I think he already took them to court.

No, but I would understand them flipping out more if it where an AK or AR. I am NOT saying they would be right. I am just saying that it is even more stupid of them to get their panties in a bunch over a skeet gun.

A gun is a gun is a gun to me, but liberals are weird. Thats why they are stupid and nobody likes them.

This is why pictures in general should be banned.

Has any of their school publications ever shown Kerry with his shotgun, or the pic of Feinstein with the AK?

My church youth choir sung in LONDONDERRY, N.H. when I was 14. I thought it was a nice place, but that was before I knew politics.

Liberals worship at the Church of the Evil Gun, that's why. To them, all guns are evil.

I think that there were several pictures of students with guns in my high school year book. Espicially the ROTC shown drilling. Can we say M-14 teacher? But that was a long time ago in a totally different place.

+1 but we had 03's. I guess the JROTC Color Guard should no longer carry rifles when they post the colors at football games.

Guns are bad.

It is a sad state of affairs when people label pictures of students with sporting guns, or any guns for that matter, as "inappropriate". We are a nation founded on the belief that men in positions of power are inherently inclined to the misuse of that power. Therefore, our intelligent fore-fathers endowed us with the 2nd amendment, that being the ability of the people to protect themselves from the zealous nature of their leaders. We are in a woefull state when the Bill of Rights is so bastardized and convoluted as to prohibit the display of the amendment which I feel is most important. The 2nd amendment is the only amendment that secures for us all the others. Without the 2nd amendment, we would be subject to the every whim of any nation or group. Violence is the means by which we have secured the liberties that so many take for granted. No treat, resolution, or ratified document has ever protected one man from another. The only force seperating our person from the subject of another is the ability to make our aggressors pay a price that they are unwilling to surrender. We secure our liberty from a tyrannical government by making the government known of our show of arms. Our soldiers protect us from the ambitions of other nations by their show of force with their arms.

I ask what the superintendent and principal are afraid of? Do they attribute Columbine, moreover, do they attribute violence in the world to the introduction of the gun? It is preposterous to assert that "guns" are the instigator of violence around the world. If we did not have guns, we would resort to the same means that our ancestors did: swords, rocks, poles, etc. Malcontent individuals would act toward each other with the same intent, however, their means would just be more crude. Violence is not an abomination of the gun, rather, the gun is an abomination of violence. The gun is merely a convention of man so as to make it easier to subdue his foe or victim. I would much rather live in a world without the need of guns. I would much rather live in a world devoid of violence, greed, corruption, etc. However, this is not the case and, therefore, we must protect our families, ourselves, and our property. We are endowed the right to bear arms and that right should never be taken from us.

I may catch hell for saying this, but I side with the school in the sense that I think that schools have the right to editorial control over their own publications.

I would agree, except for this:

Dean cited a statement on student publications in the board's policy manual: ``We encourage the use of school sponsored publications to express students' points of view. They shall be free from all policy restrictions outside the normal rules for responsible journalism.''

It's not right or fair to change the rules on the kid like this...

That rule is only there to encourage open-minded leftist points of view regarding alternative lifestyles, social justice, sticking it to Da Man, and trying to appear hip to fellow students and young, cool faculty. It does not apply to anything remotely involving conservative points of view, esp. those regarding firearms. Conservative points of view are abhorrent, backward and bigoted, and we don't want to promote that sort of thing, now do we?

My son had a similar thing happen, but it was "forgotten" by the yearbook staff. Yup, just an "innocent mistake."

The photo was included in a supplement that was mailed out, but who the hell hangs on to "supplements"?
