School yanks invite to first lady
Illinois officials heed advice of gun-control activists

Local Illinois school officials who invited first lady Laura Bush to read to students for 30 minutes withdrew the invitation following the pleas of gun-control activists critical of President Bush's policies.

Hubbard Woods School Principal Maureen Cheever extended the invitation early last week, reports the Wilmette, Ill., Pioneer Press. But local Democratic Party and gun-control activists told her there was no place in the "sacred" halls of Hubbard Woods School for a representative of the Bush administration, which they argued has a lax stance on gun control.

Mrs. Bush had not formally accepted the invitation, but she was in Winnetka Friday afternoon for a fund-raiser luncheon. Cheever called the White House two days before Bush arrived to retract the offer.

Earlier that day, Cheever met with the vice chairman of the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence, Bob Williamson, whose two daughters were at Hubbard Woods School on May 20, 1988, when 30-year-old Laurie Dann shot six students, killing one.

During the meeting, Williamson warned Cheever he planned to hold a press conference across the street from the elementary school if the first lady indeed visited the school.

Bush's visit came less than two weeks after the expiration of a federal ban on assault weapons, an extension of which Bush said he would sign off on if Congress approved it. Williamson, however, said the president took a "two-faced" position on the ban, saying publicly he supported the extension but doing little to help the measure pass.

Jeanne Bishop, who is on the steering committee of the anti-gun-violence group Million Mom March, called Cheever to express the group's "great pain and distress over what we felt was a really insensitive juxtaposition of location and timing."

Bishop, whose pregnant sister and brother-in-law were gunned down in their Winnetka, Ill., home in 1990, said such a visit could anger those who watched the tragedy of the school shooting unfold.

"When I think of those people having to see children at Hubbard Woods School be political props as part of a campaign swing from a president who has been so closely associated with the NRA (National Rifle Association) and has done so little to promote sensible gun laws, it was just hurtful to me," Bishop told the local paper.

Pressure on the school to retract its invitation also came from local Democrats who said Bush's 30 minutes with the children would amount to a photo-op for the Bush campaign.

Superintendent Rebecca van der Bogert denied that the district had yielded to political pressure, though she acknowledged having conversations with Cheever over a number of calls that had come in. Van der Bogert agreed with Cheever's decision to pull the invitation, which she said was driven by the meeting with Williamson.

I'd do the same thing if a Liberal pres. or first lady were being considered to speak at my son's school, because of their association with queers and anti-gun socialists.

It's really bad both ways. Children can benefit from seeing that the leaders are real people and not everyone gets the chance to meet them.

Social issues have screwed up politics.

And the real loser here is... the kids.

You just know the school superintendent woke up one morning and said, "What can I do today to better serve the ignorantzi?"

Leaving an anti-gun state is only a partial solution. The real long-term solution is getting rid of the anti-gunner from the position of power.

This is an unbelievably lame position to take... They should apologize and recant immediately.

The media would have a field day on gunowners if the tables were turned. What hypocrites.

Once again, "progressives" and "liberals" show everybody how utterly closed-minded they are.

Come to Indiana...CCW, Pro-Bush state, nice folks, come'on over...

Here is a e-mail I sent them-

I read the story about how you, Dr. Maureen Cheever, disrespected the First Lady of the United States, Laura Bush, by bowing to a special interest group and "uninviting" her to read to school children at your school.

Shame on you. As an educator, you should, of all people, should be open minded. Instead you sided with a group that hates the President and in turn, insulted the First Lady.

On your schools homepage you have this-

We always begin and end each year with an all-school assembly. A highlight of the assembly occurs as we all sing the beautiful song, "Circle of Friends." At Hubbard Woods, we live the words of the song, "Come join our circle of friends; there's always room for one more." We hope the children of Hubbard Woods School will always feel that the sky is the limit, that they know how to raise their voices so that they are heard, and can make a real contribution to their community, today and tomorrow.

I guess in the case of the First Lady, she is not worthy to join your circle of friends. I'm thankful that my son's school, here in the great State of Indiana, is far more open minded than you are.

I really wonder if the children involved knew of the Administrations stance on guns, gun control, etc, etc, etc..........

Hell, they just wanted a story read to them

Nothing like cramming politics down the throat of 6,7, & 8 year olds.

Ah, the advantages of a public education.............

I remember the Laurie Dann incident. A little background.

Hubbard Woods is a neighborhood in Winnetka area. Laurie Wasserman Dann had grown up in Glencoe - an affluent suburb just to the north of winnetka. She had had some history of was a nanny in the area. Unknown to her employer, a few years before, she had gone "ticky in the head", and spent some time eating with a plastic spoon in a Wisconsin (ya-hey dere!) psych facility. She had gotten three guns from somewhere (.22 Beratta, .32 S&W revolver, and .357 IIRC), and, after sending poisoned drinks to several frats, AND setting fire to her employer's house (with her and her kids in the basement), she went to school for "show and tell".

Her Daddy had refused to surrender his daughter's .357 when the Glencoe police had asked for it earlier, stating the "she needed it to protect herself " against her ex-husband, a man she allegedly stabbed with an ice pick while he slept.

She used to ride elevators all night in Madison, WI.

OK guys - no bullshit. This is a true rich-ass limousine liberal area. I've worked in homes down there that cost more than I'll make in my life.

These people are all investment bankers, commodities traders, and trophy wives driving lexus and mercedes SUV's that consider a gravel driveway "off road".

You can't buy a cup of coffee there for less than $2.

When the Dann shooting took place, one of the horrified mothers was all over the news, hugging her child, and crying out:

How could this happen? That's not supposed to happen here

(translation - Let the n-----s and the s---s kill each other... not us precious white folks)

That's the attitude. They've busted their ass, gotten the big house, the bleached blond mom, the au pair to raise the 2.3 kids, and the fortune in charge card debt.
Real life is what happens on the news, to poor ordinary people... not them.

Money has insulated them from reality.

I wonder if the whole thing was set up to gain publicity and be anti-Bush in campaign season.
