Sand Flea is an 11-lb robot with one trick up its sleeve:  Normally it
drives like an RC car, but when it needs to it can jump 30 feet into the
air.  An onboard stabilization system keeps it oriented during flight
to improve the view from the video uplink and to control landings.
Current development of Sand Flea is funded by the The US Army's Rapid
Equipping Force.  For more information visit www.BostonDynamics.com.

Hat tip to Neal Stephenson's facebook.

You realize what Boston Dynamics is going to do next, right?

They're going to mate this technology with their creepy, headless dog robot.

Just drive it under a man-dress and hit the jump button.

It'll be like Jihadi Super Mario.

I was looking for the edit when it jumped back off the roof.

That little shit is tough, but then again, my Tamiya FAV did the same thing back in '86.

While other countries are bragging about reengineering Russian 80's tech, private companys in the US are making crazy stuff like this just for fun.

C4.  I'm not kidding.  Spiders (or sand fleas) that are also grenades or demo charges.  Make it as cheaply as possible, cheaper than a missile, and use them to bring down building too dangerous to clear.

That's what I thought when I saw it. Equip it with something like the designator that the Marines used at the end of Battle: Los Angeles.

What's the jump mechanism?  Giant self-rewinding spring?  CO2 cartridge?  Solenoid?  I don't hear any "bang!" noise, so I assume it doesn't use some sort of explosive mechanism.
