Surveillance video taken Friday night first shows a man in a trench
coat and a cane, limping down the 400 block of Valencia Street last
Friday night. He walks right up to a bicycle, pulls a power saw from his
bag, and the sparks begin to fly.

The ear-splitting grinding of the saw seems to go on forever. People
walk casually by; most never even looking his direction. Finally, the
thief cuts through the bike lock, walks it down the sidewalk, hops on
board and rides away.

Kinda funny, just goes to show that if you look confident while you're doing something most people will never question it.

Guy's wielding power tools with the intent to steal bike, bet your ass I'm keeping walking.

I'd be thinking, "Geez, poor guy lost the keys to his bike lock..."

Link Posted: 4/19/2016 4:09:54 PM EDT
And if questioned the theif could always say man I lost my key and it pissed me off so much I just wanted to shred the lock!

It's not their problem. It's somebody else's problem, probably somebody funded by tax money.

It's the socialist way.

Dude is wielding dangerous power tools.

About as smart as trying to fight a guy with a chainsaw.

Fuck those passers-by. Not one man among them willing to don their sash and do what's right.

Lady should've grabbed some of that famous S.F. sidewalk poo and smeared it on her bike.  Would've been more effective than that shitty lock.
Link Posted: 4/19/2016 4:16:20 PM EDT
I'd be curious as to the model/price of the bike

Arfcom's favorite acronym:  MYOB.

As a Bay Area person,m damn right I'd keep walking. Shit, I may help him. Get that bike off the street and its one less entitlement minded fucking prick riding around on his special snowflake 2wheeler.

A reflective vest, a clipboard, and confidence will pretty much get you into anywhere, up to and including Area 51.

Same here. I don't think people necessarily were ignoring a crime, as much as they were probably thinking that exact same thing.

There's a corollary to that...  A white truck with cones around it becomes invisible.

Buddy of mine is a GC and had a slow week a while back so he drove around town parking places in his truck, putting out the cones and wandering off.  No tickets, no police stopped, not so much as a Post-It note on his window.

But if you have the clipboard and look slightly pissed, the guys with the toolboxes open doors for you.

I've also heard it as, a cup of coffee in one hand and a clipboard in the other.

Maybe if I seen the owner of the bike lock it to the rack.  There was a case where a bike courier had his bike stolen and other couriers chased him down and delivered street justice.

What exactly are they supposed to do?

"Hey, are you stealing that bike?"

"No, it's mine.  I lost the key."

Now what?
Sure, you can call the cops, but he'll be long gone by the time they get there.

I guess you can take a picture with your phone, assuming the cops care.

Yep

Unless you were going to just shoot him in the back.

Not my bike, not my problem.

I would have shot him in the base of the skull and waited for the police to bring me my reward.

If it keeps the original owner from obstructing traffic at a Critical Mass event then no fucks given.

Otherwise, fuck thieves

Handtruck and a clipboard worked pretty well for me.
Pretty routine for me to walk into a hospital, load up $500,000+ worth of instruments and walk out the door without being questioned.

I've walked into many Employee only spaces because of the fact that I acted like I belonged there including a few that were secured by keycard or door code.

I even did that for an interview. Office was closed and the entrance for employees was propped open. Not wanting to be late or a goober by waiting for them to open the lobby, I just walked in the employee door and hung out until someone asked me if I knew who was interviewing people that day. I replied that I would love to know since I had an interview

Pointed out the security issue with leaving a secure door propped open during the interview and still ended up with the job.

If you gave him the beatdown he deserves, he would turn around and sue you in civil court for X million and they would dock your pay the rest of your life.

Those pedestrians must be Arfcomers.  Why?  MYOB and Don't Invite the man into your life.

If you are bold and act like you belong, no one will question it.

Saw some dateline episode like this.  They had a guy in a busy parking lot in daylight attempting to smash a car window.  Nobody freaked out, in fact many offered to help the guy.  Everyone assumed it was his car and he locked his keys inside.   Did the same experiment sneaking around in dark parking lot trying to be covert.  Everyone called the cops to report suspicious activity.

Wear an orange vest and a hardhat, you can damn near go and do anything without anyone questioning you.

Well when the police tell you to mind your own business all the time and not get involved, things like this tend to happen.

The police?

Heck, the general public (including members here) have stated so.

A cordless angle grinder in the hands of a guy that limps along with a cane is not that dangerous.  However like the poster above, I would probably figure he just lost his key.

I don't know. Should I go on with my boring life, or maybe get to kick the shit out of someone legally? Decisions, decisions.....
