I recently "upgraded" from a Samsung Galaxy S4 to an S5, and every time I turn around, the thing is asking me to update.  Seriously, I picked the phone up the week after Thanksgiving, and have already gone through 3-4 updates....with the last update earlier this morning.  Just picked up my phone, and it is already wanting to update again.  I never had to update this much with my S4, anyone else running into a similar issue?

S5 is about 2 years old, and about three in the production line.  A fair bit of the up dating has to do with the various carriers.

I don't plan on "upgrading" my S4 anytime soon - I don't see any reason to.

Same thing I was thinking. I have a S4 and at our local big box stores, most are new S7, a few S6. I don't see any S5 for sale.

I have the S5 and like it.  My only complaint is how loaded with bloatware the Samsung is.

Mine has been trying to update for over a year. Every morning it asks my permission and gets declined.
I swear somewhere in those updates are codes that causes the phone to slow down and crash so you buy a new one.

I was using a Samsung Charge up until a few months ago... I believe that was the second 4G phone they made. I bought it in 2011. Upgraded because it was running slow. Dropped it dozens of time yet the glass was fine and it worked perfectly, other than speed.

It rarely had updates. Probably because they stopped supporting it. Security is a big factor. I'm sure Samsung is just trying to stay ahead of the exploits. Last thing they need is more bad PR.

Updates make me nervous...this last one changed the shape and layout of the icons on the screen, not sure I want any more surprises.

they are mostly android security updates.  Samsung is pretty much the only OEM that gets them out regularly to users, other than Google with the Nexus/Pixel devices

It's pretty silly to ignore OS and security updates because the shape of the icons might change

I have an S7 and the couple updates it went through since I got it earlier this years were security updates, which is not bad, considering all the stuff they are exposed to when we browse the Internet and they are constantly connected to it.

My S5 only had updates a couple times a year. I just got an S7 active cause the screen on the 5 quit turning on.

I've had 2 major updates in two days, hopefully that's just because it's new. This thing is pretty bad ass so far.

I understand that, but two updates in less than 12 hours??

Your phone will be getting all the updates that were issued for S5 model since its inception date. The timing is random. Once first update is received, the S5 will contact Samsung servers and check for any available updates again. The server will accept or reject the update request based on some factors. Eventually, the next update will be pushed. This process will continue till your phone is on the latest software revision. So yes, you may get several updates in a matter of hours or days.

the S5 is two years old; it's got two years worth of updates to install to get it up to date

Bingo

Plus most are security updates but a few system updates too.

I have a S7 and when I got it it needed an update and I know coming up I will be getting another one after the first of the year.
Plus your provider will send out random updates when they do things on their end as well.
