As soon as I saw them going at it with a backhoe, I knew it was going to end poorly.

If they knew there were no fire hydrants near by, they really should've gotten a better safe. Even if the fire department was able to put it out in a decent amount of time, drywall does not make an ideal fire resistant material in a safe.

What did you expect them to do?  Are tears, hysteria and hair tearing really going to accomplish anything?  The fire was out, they had already come to grips with the situation, so they made the best of it.

Fire ratings on steel safes are a joke.

Not an expert but looking at the amount of lugs on the hinge side I would say probably higher end consumer gun safe.

I doubt that very many safes could withstand over an hour in a burning building

and the roof was allowed to colapse

If any of the scopes have lifetime warranties, I would send it back and say "it overheated."

Yep, pretty much as I figured.  Fire ratings are worthless.  A steel box placed in a hot fire for any amount of time is going to get hot, period. To think you could put something around that to keep the heat from destroying the materials inside is crazy.  Best you can do is try to put out the fire asap and reduce time.

In that case, you're right. Even a higher end UL125/UL350 probably wouldn't have survived it, simply due to the fact that the safe had to endure way longer than it was rated.

That being said, I will say that my safes fire rating is not worthless, and would absolutely survive any fire in my neighborhood other than the entire block going up.

Excavator operator has a good touch.  I'd like to offer him a job!

So, basically my reaction/ overreaction to this video thinking I need to upgrade my safe right away is unwarranted?  It's a 52 gun Winchester branded safe.  Probably junk I'd guess?

How close is the fire department? How close is a fire hydrant?

Well now we know all a thief has to do to get into your safe is bring an excavator.

Country, so no hydrants.  3 different departments (mostly volunteer) within 15 miles or less.

It is relative to how close the FD is to your shack, and how many other things they are responding to.

If you live in the woods and there are a lot of seasonal fires, a fire rating is probably useless.

I bought my safe with burglary in mind.  Insurance can replace guns after a fire, I just don't want them stolen.  That is why I bought a true burglary rated safe, with no fire lining and no interior.

FD is minutes away.  Hydrant is actually in my yard.

ONe guy mentioned Ft Knox, and the safe looks very similar to their construction.

Disclaimer: I no longer work for Fort Knox.  I neither like nor dislike them... need to change my username.

That's a Liberty.

You can tell by their hinges and the cam mechanism driving the bolts.  Fort Knox has gears and internal hinge models recess into the door frame in front of the fire protection rather than into the safe body itself.

The hinges on the liberty actually rest in cutouts in the fire material, creating a hot spot for the interior to ignite and burn.  Can't say that's what happened in this fire.

Don't know the details of the fire so not sure how well a Fort Knox would have fared either.

Again, just independent opinion based on what I saw when I was in the industry
