I am considering buying an SP1, serial 171XXX, that looks original and correct except the lower receiver appears to be painted a semi-gloss black.  The owner says he bought it new and that it's original, but it doesn't look right.  Comments?

Thanks

Every SP-1 I've ever seen has been dull Grey Anodized.
Most have a serail number with SPXXXXXX...

This is a good site for checking Serial numbers

I have a SP1 also with a serial number very close. I bought the SP1 new back in 1979. The color is black (very close to the current Bushmasters). A Colt 6520 government carbine that I bought recently was Colt Grey (perhaps this was the color that you were expecting?).
