Update 10/30/06  0700 hrs CST

Airport Fire Dept called over this morning and said they figured out what what going on the other night.  I guess our local Toyota factory was shooting off some massive fireworks for something.   Toyota is about 10 miles north of the county line though.  About 20 miles north of the farthest away location that was hearing the noise.

Mystery Solved.

----------------------------------------

Hello ARFCOM.  Help me solve a mystery.

I'm the shift supervisor at my city's 911 police/fire dispatch center.  Its currently 10pm here.  We're located in Southwest Indiana.  Around 7pm tonight we started receiving 911 calls from across the county with people reporting what sounds like a distand explosion.  They said it sounds like a very deep rumbling sound that is very short in duration....maybe only lasting a second or two.  Some people described it as distant thunder.  They have all reported hearing it several times, anywhere from 10-30 minutes apart.  In some calls some of the residents have said the sound made their windows, dishes, and framed pictures shake.

This is being reported across a 235 sq mile area, from one end of the county to the next.

I have checked with the local fire stations in all parts of the county and they have heard the sound but cannot determine the source either.  We have no active coal mine operations going on in our County.  I have placed a call to our Airport as well.  They have heard the sound but have not noticed any sort of activity that would reveal the cause of the noise.  Weather radar is clear.  The tower hasn't seen any bright flashes that would indicate transformers exploding or anything like that.  The tower called up to Indy Center to find out if any military or supersonic aircraft have been in the area recently that would account for a sonic boom but the answer was "No."

Also USGS is reporting no seizmic activity.

Any other ideas on a possible cause?   Underground Aliens (War of the Worlds?)??   EOTWAWKI scenario?  Time to bug out?   Any need for tinfoil?

Anyone have any good guesses or other possible related experiences?

Oddly enough, I heard what sounded like distant thunder about 15 minutes ago or so - maybe half an hour (I'm just guessing, didn't look at a clock).  I don't think there's any thunderstorms forecast for this area (west of St. Louis, MO) - but I just assumed that's what it was, since it didn't sound like a plane, but was more of the distant "rumble" of thunder.

ETA: Having looked at radar maps, it sure doesn't look like there was any thunderstorms in the area

Little Kim shooting Nukes your way?

Seriously, I have no idea.    If you figure it out be sure to report back.

Weird- you near an AFB?   My vote would be for  a plane that doesn't officially exist.  Or the SSDG.  Well, OK, maybe NK shock troops have been inserted.  They'd want to deny that.
I grabbed the flashlight just in case.

I didn't realize I was bothering anyone.  Sorry, I'll knock it off.

Could it be thunder?

A year or more ago, police around the area where I live started receiving calls about boom sounds.  Nobody could figure it out, until the Navy admited that SEAL teams were using ships in the James River "ghost fleet" to practice dynamic entries, including blasting doors open.

My guess: Iran to get bombed big time in about 8 hours.

It is illegal for a civilian to have a supersonic plane. That being said it is also illegal for anyone(including military pilots) to break the sound barrier of over U.S. territory.

Lewis and Clark heard loud noises around June of 1805, I think. Clear day....they could never identify it either.

How many here have actually heard a sonic boom? I hear them daily (sometimes up to 15 times per day) when i'm at home and work (work at edwards afb) and can tell you that cracks do not sound like one would imagine. USGS should be able to pick up a boom.

Sounds like a test flight of a plane not on any published flight plans if you ask me.  If it's high enough up, it obviously wouldn't impact any commercial aviation, but people on the ground could still hear it.

My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you today that I've signed legislation that will outlaw    Iran forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.

Incorrect.

It is illegal for a civilian to exceed mach 1 except under specific authorization in specific areas cleared for supersonic flight.

There are a number of supersonic capable jet aircraft in civilian hands.

In answer to the original question...the USAF is using some of its coolest toys.  Toys that are ripping along at insane mach numbers,   cruising along like it was nothing.

They're booming their way to Iraq,  and booming their way back.   (Or to Afghanistan or other points of interest.)

Back when Cecil NAS was the Master Jet Base, we used to hear them every once in a while offshore.  Oh, and the space shuttle every once in a while on a quiet launch day.

2 masses of air of different temps colliding will cause this noise.
Also the mothership entering out atmosphere.

(US Goverment)  We categorically deny that we have any aircraft named "Aura".  Furthermore we are conducting no R&D into any new planes or any R&D at all.  The American people are hearing things (US Goverment)

I'd guess it is ethier distant thunder, or something the goverment officially denies even exists.

But I just loaded a few more mags, in case Kim Jong is getting frisky

I was fortunate enough to see a large object burn up entering the atmosphere.

Whatever it was started off as a loud whooshing sound and then turned into an almost subsonic base rumble. If I hadn’t been looking right at it I would not have been able to pinpoint the source.

It looked a lot like this although I didn’t take this pic.

You might want to check with local observatories and see if you are having a meteor shower.

I heard something similar outside a buddy's house a few hours ago. We thought it was thunder at first, but it sounded different. I live in Fort Wayne Indiana.

Weird stuff.

Such noises have been going on since at least the first European colonists landing in America. Nobody has ever been able to figure it out.

Someone else just suggested this too.  I just trying calling up the observatory run by the Indiana University Astronomy Dept but didn't get an answer.  Trying to locate some other numbers now.

Interesting though that DK-Prof is hearing the same in St. Louis which is about 200 miles west of us.   Makes me wonder if those B-2's having taken off and are flying East.

Anyone out toward Louisville, KY or Cincinnatti, Oh hear anything I wonder?

If you are near an airport (25 miles or so) you may be hearing noises associated with jet engine runups.  Compressor stalls.

If atmospheric conditions and temps are right, you can hear them very far away.

Funny thing, is they don't sound that loud close to the plane. especially if it is in a runup area with a blast fence.

Well, I'm out of ideas.  Might be something from the airport but I would think they would have known it was a normal aircraft noise when I called and talked to them. They were just as curious as I was from hearing them too.

We haven't received any more calls since I originally posted either so maybe its over with.

I was flyning tonight around Mobile and Pensacola and saw two meterors burn up...  I've seen my share of falling stars, but these were spectactular... bright, with lots of globs of burning stuff spitting off... about 9PM eastern.

I have heard people calling in to the Coast to Coast show saying the same thing. I'm here in Northern Colorado and heard two booms last months. I believe it may be something earth related.

Go there and page down, they're hearing the same thing in California. The have the phenomena on the East coast too.

Oh shit.

It might be New Madrid waking up.  Google "Earthquake boom".. depending on the type of activity it may not register on seismic instruments.

ETA - found this -

"Earthquake Boom is a very loud, deep sounding explosion, which emanates from the earth. If directly above emanation, directional determination may be difficult as sound is not from a distinct direction as it is from a wide area of earth’s surface. It is a higher frequency audio form of the traditional shaking earthquake even though current seismographs cannot ‘see’ or ‘record’ them.
