That really sucks. I just got mine. Anyone have any more info? According to several sources (including me personally speaking to a SIG CS rep today) the 556R is NOT discontinued, instead they are updating the 556 line (R included). The rep wouldn't say exactly what they were doing, but there is some speculation that the 556XI program is moving forward (smaller lighter better railed hand guards and ambidextrous charging handles are 2 examples). There is some question as to whether the 556R will continue on in the current Gen2 form or also receive the XI upgrades (the rep I spoke to said yes, others said no). |

It does not surprise me if they did. The black rifle market is all about the AR platform.

I wish they sold the SIG551-A1 SBR with a 16" barrel (yes I know it would not be an SBR).

is the 556R the only platform that they make that is 7.62x39?
Damn, my dad and brother and I were just talking about getting one |

There are still some on gunbroker though and the prices aren't too bad yet since there are probably some rifles still in the supply lines. |

If someone wants to get into 7.62x39, then they can either jump in at a much lower price point with a budget AK, or spend the same $$$ as the 556R on a high end AK. Also, for the price of the 556R you'd think they'd throw in a set of BUIS. |

That sucks, I really like my 556R. It's a 2nd gen, don't have any experience with the 1st gen. Quoted: ManticoreArms and Krebs customs both have extended versions. Lefty here too, I've been looking at the MA safety. It is awkward using my left thumb on the safety due to the folding stock hinge. |

SIG 556 family of rifles had triggers that just sucked for fast trigger work.
They were consistently slower split times compared to working with AR's and drop in triggers. |

They have done this with their website before where things get shuffled around into the "discontinued" category and then pop back up as production items, so I wouldn't consider any of the guns as "gone" quite yet.
I would check their website again in a week or two and see what it looks like when it is cleaned up- it is obviously a work in progress as there is missing text and pictures in a couple of places. I guess their web developer doesn't know how to preview a site before going live! |

Hopefully, they'll come out with a version that duplicates the Swiss issue infantry rifle with a 20 in barrel.
Sig really fucked the dog with their product line. There was so much eager anticipation for their newly-released rifle ("because it's time"), and then they offered what had to be the ugliest POS to ever wear an M4 type buttstock. The later version that became the "classic" sucked as much as the first one. The 551A1 came the closest, but why Sig didn't just stick to the original Swiss Army standard configuration to begin with is beyond me. Stupid. If they release a semi-auto Stg 90 like the old pre-import ban models (which are slightly expensive), I'll spend the flow for it in a heartbeat. |

I really wanted either a 556 or 551A1 but after reading reviews and seeing MAC's videos I changed my mind. For Sig to produce these guns and become popular, the quality and prices have to compete with the AR and its big name companies. If they re-released the series with better quality like that would be found with the actual Swiss rifles, I'd trade my M1A for one. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

I'm still glad I got a 556R, but the coming SIG firearms might have neat additions (reading elsewhere there's a vague chance of ambi charging handles.......). Again, just producing the Stg90 in SA would be epic and plenty for me personally. |

Again, just producing the Stg90 in SA would be epic and plenty for me personally. Seems to me that rationalizing the production line to reflect the current Swiss military standard would meet business needs better than fucking around with some abortion of a design that attempts to reinvent the wheel. Why not just stamp out the lower receiver like the original? Why fabricate the lower from forgings that have to be designed and engineered from the ground up? Why not just use the original design with whatever mods to meet federal requirements to be legal, and be done with it? The mil. issue Stg 90 has already been designed, tested, produced by the tens if not hundreds of thousands and is a proven performer. The TDP already existed, with all specs and revisions. The decision to design a new rifle was not only a strategic error for the purposes of marketing, but an expensive and unnecessary duplication of costs. The justification for the new lower was so that it would accept M16 magazines. Makes sense I guess, since the M16 magazine is such an awesome design After all, it's not like the molds for the original Sgt 90 magazine existed or anything. Too bad Sig couldn't make them here. Some things are just impossible I suppose. Whoever the CEO of Sig is or was at the time of the introduction of the original model should have been fucking fired. |

Be honest, while the 556 was not really a home run for enthusiasts, at this point how does making a reproduction of an aging rifle advance the brand, goals, and long term viability of a company who's developing new modern defense oriented firearms like the 516, 716, MPX, MCX, LVAW, and XI? |
