On another thread about vegas steakhouses, some one posted about Ruth's Chris not being so good.  What's up?  Hannity (OK, it is advertising) braggs on them big time and I have made reservations for saturday evening.  I too will be in Vegas (Henderson) and have been wanting to try it out.  Would I be wasting my money?  (BTW how expensive is it?)  I am not rich and can't afford over $100 for one meal for 2 people.  Should I cancel or try to talk Hannity into a gift certificate or what?

I prefer Morton's for the high end chain steak

But if I ate there free like I'll bet SH does, I'd tell you RC is the best.

For budgeting, here is a link to the prices at RC in SA TX.  Can't find LV, but I'll bet it is similar.

From the little I've heard, don't expect to spend any less than $100 per person.

I've always had a good meal at RC.  I consider them an excelllent chain restaurant.

Frankly, if you can't afford it, aim lower.

I have not been ,but my Bro said they kick ass. He went to the one in Seattle. He said expect about $100 for two, with a couple drinks and tip.

I've been to Ruth's Chris in Denver twice, and once in another place I honestly don't remember.

I had a phenominal meal each time. Expensive, but GOOD!

Eating out at high end steak houses is hit or miss at best.

If I am gonna roll the dice on a steak dinner, I am putting my money on the greatest steak chef in town
ME

I have ate at alot of top notch steak houses in my time ( Including Ruth Chris ). IMHO it's tough to throw down $100-200 on a steak dinner ( figuring you are w/ your significant other ) when you can spend $20 on do it yourself in your own back yard ( not to mention the drinks are a helluva lot cheaper ).

Now if it's a big night out / alot of friends / couples etc ... and you are celebrating whatever occasion ( sp? ) I can see justifying the high end steak house prices.

I have been to RC a couple of times. Dinner, drinks, dessert and tip for four people = $400.00
Good food!

Last year I went to Prime at the Bellagio in Vegas. Maybe the best ever for me, but expect to pay $100 per head. Ruths Chris is always good here in Shitcago and nearly as pricey.

I've been to Ruth's Chris several times here in Austin.

For me and my wife it runs about $85 before tip for two steaks and two sides (family style sides....big ennough for two people). We are not drinkers so it was water for her and a Coke for me.

I really like their steaks, but if you are a little hesitant about spending $100 on one meal maybe you should skip it. Afterall, it is just a meal and you could be throwing down that $100 on the tables.

Either way I hope you have fun!

Expensive enough that I don't eat there except on special occasions but good enough that I keep it at the top of my list for those occasions.

Great food. Great service. Never been disappointed there.

The food and service is top notch.  I've eaten steaks all over.  Meat is like an AR-15...everyone has their own preference.

Personally I find that there is no better steak out there.  The sides are also top notch.

Prepare to spend approx. $100 for two people (including tip).  This does not include any alcholic drinks.  It is worth the money and you and your wife will have a great time.

Good luck at the tables.

A lot of the reason Ruths Chris and Mortons and other places are so good is that they get Dry Aged beef (or age it themselves).

This is NOT something that is easy to do...it involves letting the natural enzymes break down the meat, letting it dry a bit which makes for premium flavor.   Most of the stuff you find in the stores, or even at a good meat market/butcher is wet aged--helps some, but doesn't quite do the same thing for flavor.

Try to do it yourself (and do it improperly) you can get a spoiled batch of meat.

There are ways to do it at home--an internet search will give some.  You must do it with a whole roast (sub-primal) type, and cut the steaks after it is aged--you cannot age individual steaks.  You also lose some weight due to water loss and the trimming that needs done on the overly dry outside.

There are places on-line (and in some cities) that sell dry aged steaks, but figure on $30+ a lb for a decent ribeye or strip.

I am not averse to spending a little extra, but don't want to spend $100 per.  She will probably order the Seviche and I will get something basic.  I checked the special occaision/other button on the online reservation thing to see what happens.  It is just that I have been hearing all the adds and have never had the chance to go.  Will be taking the weekend off in Henderson and she will be flying in tuesday to stay at her sons for a week.  I figured that would be the best time to try.  But if someone has a better idea, I am willing to adjust.  (OK I am a cheap bastard)  Maybe a casino that I can catch a cheap show too.

Nothing. NOTHING. Is as good as The Prime Rib. They have locations in DC, BMore and Philly. There is NO excuse to not eat there at least once in your life. Try the prime rib, it's spectacular. They make excellent coffee, too, and even have a selection of fine liquors (aged scotches, brandies, aqua vitaes) and cigars.

Go there. Go there now. You will not regret it.

Edit. NOTHING is as good, I mean it. Not booze, not pot, not even sex with five women at the same time. Well, okay, the last one is better. But barely.

i love peter luger.  the very mention of the place makes me want to jizz my jeans.  "you can't beat our meat" is an old butcher shop joke from my home town---a butcher shop actually used that as a tag line.  priceless.

also, in the town i attended undergrad school, there was a furniture store called The Sofa King ---his tag line was "Our prices are SOFA KING Low!"   i still use that to this day--as in:

peter luger's is SOFA KING good

so and so is SOFA KING retarded--etc.

Best. Steak. Ever.

I love Ruth's Chris.  Mortons is almost as good but Ruth's is better.

I have heard Bones in Atlanta is better but of the 6 steakhouses that I have eaten at that were billed as "better than Ruth's Chris",  none were.

The steak I had at Ruth's Chris in Chicago about 5 years ago was one of the top 5 I've ever had.  The one I had a few months ago at Ruth's Chris in Indianapolis was average at best.  When I lived in Indy I had better steaks at Shula's and (crap, I can't remember the name, I think it was) St. Elmo's.

Never been to a Ruth's Chris...

I'd love to go to Lugers....

I have been to The Hereford House and the Golden Ox in KC though....Hereford house was amazing, ate there twice...both meals easily within my top 4 ever....the only otehr place that rivals them was a high end fusion place a client took us to in Honolulu, something like 3660 On the Rise...that was pretty spectacular too...Oh and McCormick and Schmicks in Baltimore....

The dining highlites of my life....

Allow me to condense this mish-mash of opinion.

Ruth's Chris steaks are as good as any other chain out there. They ALL use the same grade of beef (aged and prime). Ruth's cooks a delicious meal.

Mortons/Peter Lugers/Bones/Sparks/Smith & Walenski's/Metropolitan Grill/et al....ALL have delicious steaks as well.

The main differences for the most part are: atmosphere/price/and "E.O.T.S." (Everything other than steaks...like sides and non-steak entre's)

Personally, I think Ruth Chris creamed spinach is incredible, as are many other sides of theirs. But the same can be said for the others as well. Some here will claim a HUGE difference between, say, Mortons & Ruth Chris. They're full of shit. That's it, the end. I've eaten at both, in multiple states and the differences are negligable.

Some meals at EITHER place on any given night might be better than the other, but the bottom line is that they're VERY similar.

In addition $100 for two people is insufficient. More like $150-$200 to be safe (assuming you'll be needed bar service with your meal).

Eating at a high end steak house is a MUST for any meat lover. The steaks are just that much better than places lower on the price scale. It's a treat, not an every day event. Have fun.

Can't really add to the Ruth Chris' part,

but, I'll talk anyway.

Worked as a doorman in Charlotte, NC for about 5 years, and got comped on a lot of stuff.  Never had a Ruth Chris',  (Think one is there/coming now).

Iwill say that out of the three I did enjoy (Several times each!!)

Morton's was resting on its reputation and Cigar selection/section.  B (even a "good" steak is better with the right atmosphere).

The Palm (I believe they are a chain) was a little better, but you could tell they were trying to make a name for themselves.  B+ (the meat wins out over "ambi-ahnce").

The Capitol Grille (also eaten at the one in D.C.)  for the money and the service, this was the best one of the three for me.  Every time, I could cut my steak with the back end of the knife, and it was seared on the outside, bloody on the inside.  A+ (I could have died and went to heaven happy as a carnivore).  The second time I went to D.C. during graduate school we were lucky enough to run into and buy a drink for Randy Cunningham (back when he was only known as the congressman and Vietnam Ace).

YMMV.

I've been to a couple of Ruth Chris's and they were both way above avergage but not great.  Been to a couple of different Morton's and was very impressed both times.  The quality of the meat was about the same between the two but the preparation and especially the service was far, far better at Morton's.

Well, I cancelled my reservation.  Talked to my girl and she agreed that it was a waste.  Going to buy a honey baked ham and fry up a turkey and just make a family cookout of it.  Same amount of money we will feed 7 and have leftovers.  Plus, I really like cajun fried turkeys.  Actually prefer both the honey baked ham and the fried turkey over any steak house steak I ever had.  (including some high end steak houses I have been too).  So, the res has been cancelled, the ham has been ordered and the turkey is already in the freezer to be pulled out thursday for frying on saturday.  Gonna grill some corn on the cob and portobello mushrooms, make a big batch of mashed potatoes and a few other things and pig out.

Peter Luger's is the greatest Steakhouse on Earth.
The very best dry-aged Porterhouse.

If you think you can get one at your local supermarket and do it better yourself, you're wrong.
If your local butcher or purveyor of prime meats has good dry-aged porterhouse, it will probably cost you about $35-$45 a POUND.

Luger's.
