Ukraininan guy at work says Russian "jeeps" are vastly superior to American ones. He's a mechanical engineer, so is he right, or just blinded by nationalism?
Well, it will work in conditions an American vehicle never could. So to some extent he is correct.
Never heard of them....
But I do know that very little out of Russia is "vastly superior" to anything we have in the western world. |
I remember back in the either the late 80's or early 90's(probably 90's) they were talking about importing those here. I am guessing polution controls and crash test safety issues killed that idea.

Likely equal to our 1940's Jeep technology. Or the Kubelwagen |
Russian "jeeps" are likely crude and designed to be maintained by conscripts, if at all. They will probably run with little maintenance, just like the AK.
I don't know.
But if a company made "jeeps" with flat head 4 cylinders engines with points and old school ignition, I bet they could sell a ton of them! I'd love to have an old school WWII tech jeep as a hunting vehicle and putt around! Low tech RULES! |
I dunno, sounds iffy, perhaps in Russia they are.
I'm gonna bet the jeep has been the most versatile vehicle know to man, bar none. Gotta be a reason |
I rode in a UAZ-469.
I didnt think it would make it across town, biggest piece of shit I ever parked my fat ass in. Hindsight 20/20 I should have walked. |
Sinple, crude, unreliable.
Not even on par with a WWII Ford GPW Jeep. |
called Ural.......still a piece of shit......I'd take a Jeep anyday than that.....
Durable...please......and I lived in Hungary where it has broken down many times. They were tough but the parts for them were shitty made... |

Quoted: when i was in mongolia- the mongolians swore by them. they are called UAZ, for ulyelnish [or some shit] auto zawerke. they were badass and cost 3k us$ new. maybe underpowered for american roads, but plenty sturdy and typical russian crude but sturdy and reliable. there is about 20 versions of them, but this is the base model: http://www.carsbase.com/photo/UAZ-31514_mp95_pic_14284.jpg Kinda reminds me of an FJ40. |

Russian stuff may be crude by our standards, but it'll work in insane conditions, and be easy to work on and cheap to replace. |

I believe he was referring to the military versions.
Lot of pure speculation in this thread so far...but dammit have you seen conditions in Russia? And how they treat thier gear? Cheap shit would just not survive there. |
If ya do a search on Russian trucks offroading on Youtube, you'll see some serious shit. They go where others fear to tread (leather seats might get ruined).

If you gather a pile of twigs and leaves under a Jeep in -40 degree weather, douse it in gasoline and set fire to it, I guarantee the parking brake will become unfrozen just as fast as as it would on any of its Russian counterparts! |
We had a bunch of military UAZ jeeps and vans in Baghdad. Fun little buggers, a lot like a primitive Suzuki Samurai.
From what I've heard Urals (Russian equivalent to Jeep) suck ass

I had 4 of them in Iraq, by the end of 7 months only one ran. It did however lack rear bell housing cover, lack is really the wrong word it came loose and would rotate around the drive shaft. Also lights didn't work, often would have to use a surefire to drive it around.
At least those 4 key really didn't matter, any keys to include pad lock keys would start them. |

I rode in and thought it was underpowered like a jeep but the ride was higher and more stable. Check this out: UAZ 469 I don't know how modified this is, it definitely has lifts, but it's impressive nonetheless! |

Why would he care if he's Ukrainian and not Russian? Try calling an Aussie a Brit; same thing! |

I've ridden in two different GAZs, but can't remember the models. I was not impressed with them.

The UAZ , meh it was a good attempt of trying to rip off the older jeeps .Ive only saw one of them at a military vehicle show so Im not sure of how it does.

Uncle in Croatia has a Lada Niva. Great little SUV. Lada's 4x4 hatchback I'd probably own one if they imported them. I like the UAZ vans, too. If anyone actually clicks the links, they're the manufacturers websites so they're in Russian. I'm not sure about other web-browsers, but Google Chrome can translate in-browser. |

Saw a bunch of them in Iraq. Every single one of them was a piece of shit.
They make decent wagons when you strip the motors out of them and hook a donkey up to the frame rails in front. |
