The Russian government has commissioned the renewal of the “Caspian Sea Monster,” the legendary ground effect vehicle (GEV). Only 30 such crafts were built in the Soviet Union over two decades.

The revival of GEV production was announced by the Alekseev design and construction bureau, which used to be the leading producer of such vehicles. According to its production branch director, Evgeny Meleshko, the bureau is working on a big model. It will spend two years making the new design with the first tests to be launched in 2012.

Fascinating vehicle.  A way of moving a lot of troops over water at pretty high speed.

With 8 engines, is that thing more efficient than two AN-124s would be? Can they carry some absurdly high amount of stuff?

It apparently is capable of carrying 50% more weight than a confentional aircraft of the same size, at the same time using less fuel than the confentional aircraft.

The reason is that it is flying in ground effect. Basically its riding on a cushion of air. Drag is reduced significantly while the craft is in ground effect.

Has long range missile capability, can carry troops or equipment a few meters above the water at 345+ mph. Much faster than any ship.

The other advantage is that it doesn't need a "landing strip". Any body of water can be that. But as cool as it is... it's just ridiculous in terms of practicality IMO and seems like more of a publicity stunt more than anything. Not that governments and militaries haven't always done plenty of that...

The thing is, the US is the perfect market for it.  This thing was designed for getting across large inland seas.  We have more of the  than Russia does - we just call them lakes.

How about Detroit to the UP in a couple of hours.  WITH your car?

wow.

Not to mention the benefits of avoiding radar detection until they're pretty much there.

Not sure how...  "exposed" it really is being such a huge, noisy mosterous thing that probably can't maneuver very quickly - but I can see the benefits of getting a bunch of shit somewhere right-the-fuck-now.

And at very low altitude which may help it evade radar.

The engineering/science behind the monster is actually very, very interesting.  I always wondered what kind of efficiencies could be achieved on a similar design built with US technologies.  Figured it would be a very interesting fast coastal hauler - thinking high tonnage between FL and NY or CA and WA @ 400 knots.

Ekranoplan, I has it.  Troops, missile, whatever I want to carry. But when Antonov says four more An-124s for the price of three, I jump in it.

I've seen the videos from the History Channel and they always show it flying in a straight line, how does it turn? Does it bank like a plane or does it go into the water to turn like a boat?

You need to look more outside the box.  Imagine the practicality of a "shuttle service" with something like this for the great lakes.  Or a shuttle service through the Puget Sound, delivering people from Seattle to Victoria in less than half an hour without the need for an airport and capable of delivering not just people but a few vehicles as well.

I suspect we are going to see US aerospace getting a piece of this, so the road to absolute globalization continues.
