Man charged with 276 gun counts

A Southwest Side man was charged Thursday with 276 counts of possession of unregistered firearms, police said.

James R. Patrick, 63, was arrested Wednesday morning after police found about 300 handguns, shotguns and rifles in his home in the 3700 block of West 62nd Place, plus several thousand rounds of ammunition.

The charges against Patrick are misdemeanors, Officer Kristina Schuler said. Of the counts, some are for failure to register a firearm, some are for possession of unregisterable firearms and others are for possession of certain long guns not registered before 1982, she said. Each charge carries a penalty of up to $500 or imprisonment of up to 90 days, according to city ordinances.

Eric Ellis, of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said ATF agents are continuing to investigate how Patrick obtained the weapons and what he planned to do with them. In addition, ballistics tests will be performed to determine if any of the weapons have been used in a crime.

Of particular interest to federal authorities, he said, was an AR-15 rifle that police believe Patrick was converting from semi-automatic to automatic, potentially a violation of federal law. Officers found a military manual in Patrick's house that included instructions on the modification.

Also found was a pistol designed to fire shotgun shells, which is being sent for further study at the ATF technology lab to determine if it violates federal statutes, Ellis said.

Why would the military need a manual to convert AR-15 to full auto?  Don't they already have M-16s and M-4s?

It was probably just a m16 armorers book or something, he was planning on drilling a sear hole and fashioning himself a sear.............
