Opinions?

It looks good for the price

It's supposedly bedded with a free float barrel from the factory.
Has a adjustable trigger that looks quite a bit like an accutrigger as well.

The only downside is the available chamberings.
I'd have liked to see a .300 win mag option

Maybe Wal-Mart has them.

The Ruger American is just another cheap plastic gun to compete with the Remington 770, lower end 700s, Marlin, Savage and Mossberg.

It's nothing special, nothing fancy and the few I have seen were not that impressive.

Overpriced.

The best buy in a basement model rifle these days is the Mossberg line.

Don't bother with the Remington 770 or others on that action  platform. they are crap

Get a 700 Remington

I'm not sure what some of you people are smoking, because around here I've seen the American Rifle selling for $330 brand new - please show me where you can even buy a Remington 700 action for that price.

Compared to the other offerings in the sub-$400 category, the Ruger would probably be my pick, despite my lack of interest in Ruger products.  It's got an exceptionally smooth bolt, an extremely nice faux-Accutrigger, detachable mag, and sleek design.  It doesn't look like Glock or Taurus shat out a bolt gun, which is far more than can be said for certain other bargain models out there today.

I wish one of these companies would do a cheap bolt gun with a decent aperture sight instead a cheap scope mount.

Around here I'd say go to a gunshow and find a used one, I've never paid more than $400 for one. Gunshows vary though so who knows about the OPs area.

I handled one at a C.A.L. Ranch store the other day. It was OK, but I think I'd rather have something more substantial. I didn't like the plastic magazine. It looked cheap & flimsy.

Look for a nice used Swedish Husqvarna. You can find a very nice rifle made of forged steel and walnut.  Just look and don't be a schnook.
