I shot a revolver for the first time today. It was a S&W 6-shot .357. Maybe you guys can help me narrow down what model it was. I don't remember.

  1. It was awesome.

  2. Stout recoil. See #1 above.

  3. Blows water jugs up good. See #1.

  4. How do you grip these things comfortably? I can lock down pistols, but this thumb-over-thumb business is hard.

Just one more gun to add to my wishlist.

I have a S&W 686,  4" barrel. Great gun.

What else is relevant? I'm a

It had finger grooves.

Don't remember if it was longer than a 4" barrel.

Heavier than my P2000 and G26

About how long was the barrel? Two inches or eight?

I'm imagining a fairly small revolver if it was hard to hold.

I just picked up an S&W 66 today.  Ya know, I love my Ruger Security Six, but this S&W blows it away.

They only make/made about 10,000 variants of the 6 shot .357 revolver over the many decades of production...maybe go to the S&W site and narrow it down a bit.

Yes. I can't say that it DIDN'T look like that. So it was probably a 686.

I was really impressed. I didn't think I'd be, but it was a lot of fun. The SA pull was LIGHT.

I'm pretty convinced it was a 686, based on the site and this thread. The 4" barrel seems too short, but 6" too long. It was probably 4", though.

IMO, Pre-Lock Smiths are some of the best revolvers out of the box.

If you are considering a revolver, put S&W at the top of your list.

I have one .357 with a 6" barrel and it's pretty fun to shoot.

I have another with a 2" barrel and that's frickin awesome to shoot.

thumb over thumb is by no means 'hard'. Unless you are unlearning that thunmbs forward crapola.  Just keep your flesh clear of the cylinder gap (between cylinder and barrel forcing cone).

Whatever you do, DON'T hold it like this with your supporting hand -

eta  68-1 (681) with a pachmayr finger-groove grip, fits my meaty hand like a glove.

I don't think thumbs forward is crapola for autos. That's what I'm used to.

It's just different, I guess. I didn't think holding a pistol was comfortable until I did it a lot.

Revos are a blast.  Older Smiths and Colts are better, no MIM parts.  My favorites are a Colt Python 38 Special Target 8" barrel, old Colt hand fitted quality, beautiful bluing, and smooth to shoot.  Smith 610 in 10mm 6" barrel, race gun with full moon clips.

A lot of guys won't touch a wheel gun because they think they need to carry 50 rounds to defend themselves.......spray n pray.  A revolver in skilled hands is a very formidable weapon.

I'm always on the hunt for a Smith 57 in 41 Mag.
