Too much interservice rivalries, not enough cooperation or coordination.

Time for an overhaul.

Here's my idea:

Strategic Forces - Basically, our nuclear forces. What ever resources they need for that. Subs, ICBM's, bombers, space, etc....

Tactical Forces - Our primary fighting force. Conventional weapons. Planes, helicopters, tanks, ships, carriers, etc...

Special Forces - Fast reaction fighting force. Smaller, more mobile. Planes, helicopters, tanks, ships, carriers, etc...

Security Forces - Border patrol, coast guard, TSA, etc... all rolled into one.

Give each force what it needs for the mission.

I see immediate problems with operational co-operation. Send B-1s out and about, or worse, B-2s, and someone in STRATFOR forgets to tell the TACFOR guys they're out there, and you can see problems showing up. Similarly if an Ohio accidently wanders into an area that a Carrier group wanders into without being told about it. You might think these are easy things to clear up, but we're having troubles enough now as it is. (F-15s vs UH-60s in Iraq, anyone?)

Also, who runs joint bases? B-1s and A-10s at the same base? Or worse, what if you have F-16s equipped with B-61 dial-a-nukes? Do they suddenly come under Strategic control?
