First of all WTF???!!!

So I was at Howards Mexican restaurant last night eating some tacos and I decided to order a margereta. The waitress asks to see my ID and when I produce my Millitary ID she says "Do have any other form of ID we do not accept millitary IDs as a valid form of ID". WTF! I just showed her my State drivers license and got my drink after expressing my disdain for this policy. On the way out I asked the manager why they don't take Millitary IDs there and she totaly sided stepped the quetion saying she never took the class that the servers took on how to authenticate IDs and shit.

Edited for a spelling error....... Thanks Ragnaroc!

Military ID is not valid ID for alcahol in NY. I haven't seen one recently, but the last one I saw looked as if my 8 year old nephew could've made on on the PC. They are just covering thier asses

Ive seen alot of places like that. No need to get bent all out of shape about it.

No big deal

Howard's doesn't sound like very authentic mexican cuisine.
Link Posted: 3/23/2006 4:03:31 AM EDT
My military ID usually gets me all the free drinks I want.

Link Posted: 3/23/2006 4:03:53 AM EDT
Wow I didn't know it was that widespread.

I guess what pised me off was more the fact that I've been using it for years in perhaps hundreds of bars and other places and now all of the sudden its not valid at only one place?

Ok...... rage is gone I'm good now!

I use my Ohio CHL when I pick up kegs at the distributor.
Started one time when I went with my father-in-law to get one, and wasn't allowed in the building without showing ID.
I had recently lost my Driver's License, so I tried the old CHL.
Done it several times since and never had a problem.

They give a class on authenticating ID's to waitstaff?

Ok, so let me get this straight. You're trying to buy alcohol with an ID that does not have your date of birth on it, and you're pissed that they wouldnt let you use it I'm confused.

It was so so.

The best thing was I didn't see a single mexican cook!

A number of years ago, I went to MA with my g/f. We went to dinner with a friends of her's and I ordered a drink. The waitress carded me and declined to accept my CT DL as proof of age. Citing a policy of not accepting out of state DLs, never mind we are on Cape Cod where a lot of out of staters vacation. I pulled out my reserve (IIR) Mil ID and she declined that. "Get the manager."

Manager comes over and I explain that I have two forms of ID, a CT DL and a Mil ID that confirm my DOB. He waffled a bit and took my proof of age.
Link Posted: 3/23/2006 4:09:30 AM EDT
Nothing new. I used to deal with the same thing 84-88. Many bars would only accept DL issued in the same state.

The alternative is a sting operation by the state and losing your liquor license or being fined an enormous amount.
Link Posted: 3/23/2006 4:13:45 AM EDT
My bad LTCetme. I've never seen the back of one, only the front :P

Anyway, at least in Montana, the way I understand the law is that if they give you an ID (we only take drivers licenses as well), whether or not it's an obvious fake, the distributor is off the hook, and it's completely on the person who used the fake.
Link Posted: 3/23/2006 4:29:55 AM EDT
Next time show your DL and you shouldn't have any problems.

Had a waitress refuse my ID and took it to the bartender because she couldn't see the "state seal" shining on it. I twisted it in the light and pointed it out to her. Told her to get the manager to seat us in another location, because there is no way I was going to put up with her.

True story:

Was at a local italian place with my gf and her parents for her birthday. It was quite busy when we get there so we sat at the bar and I had a beer while waiting for the table. I get to the table finish up my beer and ask for another one.

The waitress asks to see my ID, no biggie but it intrigues as to why she would ask me to see it when she just saw me finish the beer and infront of her. So I ask her and she says that the week before the ABC board here came in set up a sting. Basically the ABC agents bought alcohol for a minor and when the minor asked for a refill and the waitress didn't card him and served him the alcohol she was arrested.

Bullshit IMO.

Bullshit. A military ID is a perfectly acceptable means of identification.

I remember that happening to me once or twice. Needless to say, they ended up accepting the ID after I raised the roof.

I find that sort of shit patently insulting and a sign of either sheer, unadulterated ignorance, or a clear indicator that a communist little fuckstick either runs the place or is turning your ID down.

RAISE HELL!

Don't blame the establishment.
Blame the state (maybe Fed, too) agencies that try to trip them up and fine the shit out of them, or arrest the bartender, as mentioned a couple posts up.
Link Posted: 3/23/2006 4:56:24 AM EDT
Buffalo Wild Wings in Bowling Green Ohio didn't take kindly to military IDs. They even claimed my out of state DL was a fake. One time, they even refused to serve a table of us because we were military. That didn't go over well. The local news reported it (my friends dad knows people) and the restaurant apologized on the local news.

One time one of their bartenders threw my out of state license back at me and said "come back when you're 21" then I said, "hey asshole, do some math, then pour me a damn beer!" I really didn't care for that place, but my friends always liked going there.

Luckily I have 4 forms of gov't ID in my wallet. Chances are one of them is good!

I have raised hell with an establishment or two when they had a problem with my In-state CCW permit. It is in fact, a state-issued ID card with birthdate.

He has the option of not patronizing the place.

Obviously you've never have owned or managed a business of this type. I have. A liquor store and bar. The licensing authority, the state in this case, gives you a book ( Atleast they did in Fla) with all the state licenses and the watermarks and holograms that they have imbedded in them. I know ours specifically said that Military ID were not valid forms of ID to serve a controlled substance.

Yes they do. Alcohol awareness training...
As far as your ID not being accepted...I had a liquor store not accept mine once as well. I was shocked as well. IMHO, I think a Govt Issue ID should trump all others...

Heed:

"we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone"

In many/most places, there was a time when the legal drinking age was 18. I am thinking that folks should be much more pissed off about that.

Link Posted: 3/23/2006 5:17:37 AM EDT
Was back in 1989 a couple bars on Cape Cod wouldn't take my military ID for admission. They also wouldn't take an out of state driver's license, especially mine because it was a "valid without photo" license (PA).
Link Posted: 3/23/2006 5:20:49 AM EDT
Personally I think that sucks, but it is ultimately the server's call on whether or not to accept the ID, at least here in TN. It's their butt on the line legally if the ID is fake/invalid so they get discretion.
Link Posted: 3/23/2006 5:30:40 AM EDT
I can see where the confusion may start being that military ID's have changed three times
since I enlisted.

The old typed and laminated ones were extremely easy to alter. There were guys that
changed the BD on theirs w/out even messing w/ the lamination by using a tattoo gun.

The first computer generated ones were better and had holograms in the front lamination material.
I've seen the dates on these altered by laminating a photocopy to the back w/ the altered date
being that the back was entirely black and white. The unaltered cards were fairly thin and the
resulting fake felt just like a regular civvie ID so unless you were familiar w/it you wouldn't catch it.

The current ones have a US seal hologram right in the middle of the protective laminate on the
front. Other than that the only things that can truly ID it are legit require specialized equipment
to read such as barcodes, smart chip and magnetic strip. So basically anyone w/ a card
printer and a stack of cards could make a bunch but I still don't see how the same thing couldn't
be done w/ most DLs.

I get atleast 2 dozen military id's at the door of the club. The ones I get have a 'chip' installed in them, the dob is on the back and the pics match up then they are good to go and I thank the guy/girl for their service and will usually comp their cover charge. That being said, we dont take many other forms of id other then a DL or a passport. Its amazing the types of id's people try to pass on to me as valid id's. I get student Id's, I get upscale condo id's....I get dl's that have been expired for years and people dont want to grasp the idea that an expired id isnt a valid id. I also get hot young broads who just 'lost her wallet' but her friends will vouche for her that she is 21...
what it comes down to is this. Las Vegas Gaming is VERY strict with id's and if we get enough dings we can loose our liquer license. Loose that and its basically a building thats worth tens of millions of dollars that just an empty shell, not counting the hundreds of people that will loose their jobs and the fines I would have to pay. SO if for ANY reason I dont like the way your Id looks I will turn it away and refuse to enterence into the establishment. Just like we dont take Mexican or Dominican Republic ids as valid Id's...they are highly counterfit and even the legit cards dont have many saftey measures built in. That usually gets fun because its usually a big group of people who are trying to come in and the person with the bad id is usually the alst one in and when I say no then the others come up to me and threaten to all walk out unless we allow their friend enterence. I simply point them to the front door and tell them that the thousand people waiting in line would appreciate them leaving.
Link Posted: 3/23/2006 5:56:25 AM EDT

It's a conspiracy to change the minds of those folks who would otherwise strongly oppose a national ID card. First it will be for "security", then for the children it will be no beer, no smokes, no porn, no ammo, etc without one.

My friend, a Marine, showed his Military ID when buying beer @ a carry-out here.
It was denied. So as he was getting out his DL he simply said: "Well, ma'am, if it's good enough to protect your freedom, it should be good enough to buy alcohol." Everyone else in line looked up at that point and gave the lady a look.

A business has the right to set whatever polices it wants and you have the right to not eat/drink there.

Military ID Cards have always had date of birth on them, at least every one I've had since 1962 has.

Ran into this one time in one of the suburbs in North San Antonio (Castle Hills). Some off duty Castle Hills LEO (female captain) stopped me at the checkout using my mil ID to buy some wine coolers (was with my then girlfriend and a buddy and his girl).

I had that and my Michigan DL, and they wouldn't accept either. I was pissed, young (23 at the time) and without much restraint. I let her know what I thought of her BS (military IDs serve as a passport, etc), and asked her if she just had a personal problem with GIs and liked to hassle them...

In fear, she called for backup. The officers that showed up pulled me aside and I explained. They seemed to indicate that this female captain was a loon, without saying it in so many words. They suggested that we just let it drop and go elsewhere to buy adult beverages. It was a touchy political situation for them, and they didn't want to override her. Don't blame them...

The bottom line is, it's just easier to voice your disgust and then go somewhere else to buy booze. Life's too short to waste energy on morons.

ETA- That off duty officer was pulling security duty at the store.
Link Posted: 3/23/2006 7:30:35 AM EDT
Generally speaking if you get nailed for selling booze to a minor it doesn't matter if you really thought he was legal, kinda like statutory rape. Doesn't matter you are still fucked.
Link Posted: 3/23/2006 7:35:43 AM EDT
Your passport won't work in most places either. I also suggest if you intend to "RAISE HELL" in a restaurant, do it after you get your food.

Buying booze off base here is no big deal...every store that sells food sells it...and they never card you. Hell, the holy roler that owns the 7-11 outside the gate won't sell smokes...but he sure does sell booze.

Biggest deal here is illegal booze smuggled from the BX. A bottle of Jack costs about twenty bucks at the BX, but costs over 60 bucks downtown on the Korean economy. They tax the shit out of imported liqour... We are limited to buying three bottles of hard liqour a month at the BX because of this. Plenty enough for me...

The bar scene here is great as thier is no need to drive. Drink your fill and stumble home

I rarely drink stateside, as I don't care to drink at home, and you have to drive to get to a bar...

It's not against the law to be fooled by a fake ID, atleast in Mass.

I did cigarette and alcohol stings when I was 17. They guys running the sting told me not to bother going to the mini marts close to the station because other cops would hear about the stings and tell them to watch out.
Link Posted: 3/23/2006 8:18:32 AM EDT
Don't blame the restaraunt or bar, blame strict liability laws and faggy state alcohol agencies/cops that do stings at these places. They are just covering their asses. In mass I've seen people OBVIOUSLY in their 30's-40's turned away at liquor stores for having out of state ID.
