Dec 20, 2005
New Zealand on Air has released a report on young people and technology which shows children as young as four are using the internet.
The public broadcasting funding agency issued the report, based on information of six to 17-year-olds and their parents from more than 15,000 houses.
One in three young people rated television as the most essential medium compared to one in seven for the internet.
But the report found half went on online every day and that younger children were the more adept users.
Chief Executive of NZ on Air Bernard Duncan says the report found that about a third of children aged six to eight have been using the internet for more than two years.
Duncan says she's surprised children as young as four are using the internet.
