I've been looking at this really cool 40GB Portable hard drive. I have a lot of stuff on my hard drive that I would like to save, because I plan on giving my laptop to my niece for college.

So my question is... can you run programs from the removable media? Install a program onto it and have it run from the drive itself?

It depends on the program.  Some software allows you to specify an installation directory, but most stuff just dumps itself in "C:\PROGRAM FILES".  Keep in mind that a USB v1 drive won't be nearly fast enough to run most things from.  Firewire or USB v2 is better.
