Well my to be wife(Saturday) just gave me my wedding present.. It is a Remington 700 SPS. Now I need some goodies for it. Just wondering what scope base is best and where to get one. Any other must haves?
It is a short action .308? What is the difference between the short and long action?
Thanks

The best one is subjective but likely to be over 250 for base and rings.

Badger is nice and will wok out for you.

If it is just a range queen you can get some simple Leupolds for about 60 bucks.

In another words its basically what you want and how much you have to spend.

For a hunting rifle that doesn't need QD rings, you cannot go wrong with some steel MIL-STD-1913 bases from Ken Farrell and some Burris Signature Zee rings (check Midway USA).

Get a surplus M1 sling and learn how to use it from field shooting positions.

The difference between long and short actions is about 1/4".

A long action is designed to accomodate the 30-06 length series of cartridges. Basically rounds based on that case, from 25-06, 270, 280, etc.

A short action is designed to accomodate the 308 length series of cartridges. Basically rounds based on that case, 243, 260, 7mm-08, etc.

The slightly shorter action should be stiffer and theoretically more accurate. However, Remington spends about 34 cents on their barrels, so don't bank on that in a factory rifle.

It is a triple-ring design, supposedly the strongest action you can buy in a bolt rifle. I would suggest you check out Leupold and other single-piece designs to mount a 3x9 scope. That would give you the most flexible, useful rifle for the least additional investment.

Unless you know what you are doing, go to a gun shop and have it mounted and bore-sighted. This will save some time at the range and they have the tools to do it correctly.

Internet opinions are free and worth what you paid!

2 quick questions.
-What is better a one piece or two piece base?
-how high of rings do I need with a 42mm scope?
Thanks

Wow, my two 34 cent barrels sure do shoot well.

skeeters65, you might look at Burris rings/mounts. I've heard good things about the posi align rings, though I've only owned the standard versions. As for a scope, take a look at the Bushnell Elite 4200 series. They are fantastic optics and the most bang for the buck.
