I notice a huge amount of women say the same 2 things on their online dating profile.
(1) "I'm independent". What's this meen? To me it meens maybe she really doesn't like to be around a BF/guy and that's probably why she is online in the first place.

(2) Something to the effect of "I'm sharp tongued" or "I tell it like it is" I forget the severall ways I've heard this, but they all seem to be simular. To me this says "I'm a total bitch" (Sorry ladies, but I'm sure you all know a lady who deserves that title, heck I know a few who call them selves that) Maybe it meens they have a lack of censorship?

It's weird because in real life I've never heard a women introduce herself as "indepenent" or "sharp tongued". Why do so many women feel the need to tell this to the world on a dating profile? Heck, one women says proudly in her profile "I'm a total bitch! If you can't handle me at my worst you don't deserve me at my best". WTF?

Do normall women say things like this?

I think by 'independent', they mean they work and take care of themselves. You know, pay the bills, etc. Probably have their own place.

Maybe 'telling it like it is' means they are trying to say they are honest? *shrug* I don't know. I'm not them. But maybe they're saying things in a roundabout way.

When I was dating, I would have described myself as independent.

Meaning, I'm not clingy. I didn't have to see the bf everyday. We were an hour apart so it really wasn't possible even if I wanted to.

I didn't have to spend hours and hours on the phone. I didn't need to know every single thing he did through out the day.

Honestly, I'm NOT very trusting.....of anybody. I'd never cheat, but is it possable to believe that any women would patently wait all week, or would a woman be just using me untill the first time another guy asks her out?

ETA: I think most people are either (1) Liars, or (2) delusional about how they perceive themselves.
The chick that IS a total bitch probably sees her self as a perfect little amish house wife and the woman who is ultra clingy and a stalker probably calls her self independent. (not a slam at women, it's human nature)
It just seems weird that SO MANY women feel the need to say that in their profile.

While it is not a bad thing to be realistic, you may want to wait awhile. Any girl who is caught in a relationship with you will never measure up and will have to spend the entire time defending herself for every little thing.

It is hard to say when it comes to what someone else means about something, but independent is not necessarily bad.
As for the how they talk to people... That is more of an iffy thing to mean, because there is being honest and there is being hurtful; sounds like they like to be hurtful.
Don't get me wrong, I am pretty bluntly honest myself, but I always try to consider what I am thinking several times before I actually say it to someone.

it's been my experience that when a chick says she's "indepenent" it means she's single and tired of being single so she's looking for a man to support her;

and when she says "I tell it like it is" it means she has a tendency to run off at the mouth when she should be a bit more conscientious of what she saying.

I describe myself as "independent" in my profile. What I mean is that I am not needy or clingy, for example I do not like texting all day or giving a constant play-by-play of what I'm up to. I'm also okay spending time by myself, I don't have to see my BF every day. Also, it's important to look at how the word is used in the context of their profiles for better insight. Hope that helps!

This would be a no-go. Perhaps I am too selective, but proper grammar and spelling, as well as profile content, definitely influence whether I will respond to a message/profile or not.

1. On the independent thing - would you prefer to have a woman who couldn't do anything without you? Seriously, I describe myself as "independent." I support myself, contribute to society, am not dependent on anyone for entertainment, have my own hobbies, etc. I do my own thing - that's what I interpret "independent" to mean. I hold leadership positions in both my church and a local community organization. Are you the type of guy who is threatened by a woman who knows what she wants to do and takes the bull by the horns?

2. If you think "plain spoken" or "opinionated" equate "total bitch" - well, not always the case. You can be plain spoken or opinionated without being a bitch.

But then there are the guys who don't like their women to even say "boo" (I dumped a guy like that a few years back after three months - no thanks!). I've got the quality I refer to as "spine" in abundance. A guy without any spine at all would not be a good fit with me. A good part of the reason I'm still single at 42 is because I have a very low tolerance for BS. If a guy doesn't respect me and treat me decently, he's gone. Very quickly. If a woman has her stuff together, why should she waste her time on a guy who doesn't have HIS stuff together?

I can't tell you how many guys I run into who seem to be incapable of dealing with every day life in one way or another. In other words, normal responsible adult men seem to be a rarity!

I've totally given up on the online dating thing myself. Privacy and safety concerns are part of it. It WAS always funny when guys would respond to my profile and send horridly written messages.

Heck, the several times I was getting rid of something in the FREE section of Craigslist, I'd sort out the responses with bad grammar and spelling. And I'd tell the person who got the item that part of the reason I chose them was a coherent email!

The biggest single problem I saw on online dating profiles for girls: They go on big tirades of things they demand in a man (the lists are often lengthy and silly); at no point do they mention what THEY bring to the table in the relationship.

Problem girls usually fit in one of these categories:
1) Crazy
2) Typical "young, dumb, and looking for douche-bags" syndrome. They'll swear up and down that they want nice guys, but their track record shows otherwise.
3) Perfectionist
4) Bridezilla ego

The hilarious thing? The men on those sites are apparently worse
The Romeos there want to tell women about their POS car, drug habits, or show them pictures of their skinny man abs in a mirror.
I don't know how many times I got a conversation with a woman simply for: speaking English, not referring to her as a pet name, not speaking to her in a derogatory way, or making choice comments about her appearance. Ridiculous.
