Y'know, I've seen that light show on Stone Mountain. It was instructive to me,
i am conflicted. I was born in Ft. Knox. My sister was born in Ft. Hood. My grandmother (maternal) was a Kentucky Col. I schooled in Ft. Hood, a place in Fla called Green Cove Springs (dad was in 'Nam) and Augusta Ga (where i earned the jNRA Distinguished Expert 4-position). I spent a couple years military service in Fla.... By BIRTHRIGHT i'm a southener, So is my sister. And yet, i just cannot nail that southern accent well enough to pass. I live where i live, because i got a too-good-to-leave job and i need to take care of my feckless sister and her spawn. I'm the only real man in their lives. little girls need strong men just as much as little boys do. The south, where i once traveled freely, has grown strange and hostile at turns, Just because a person lives someplace like ... St. Charles il, does not make him the cartoon devil you imagine. I believe the whole issue needs to be burried. We can did it up if it's useful...but i'm not seeing that. First of all, my favorite singerw are Kindy and Kate from the B-52's. I will gladly tend to any antiyankee hostility they might feel. I have not mentioned this, but IHAVE STOPPED WITH THE TEXICAN JOKES out of a sense of honor. I will not tell texas jokes any longer |

Hell, from what I remember the Confederates killed a fair number of their own people. This is just something that we can argue until blue in the face and never see eye to eye. I would think that with all the troubles facing ALL of us Americans, with all of the enemies we have around the world who would cheerfully suicide-bomb us, or slit our throats without giving a single thought as to whether the victim was from above or below the mason-Dixon line, that re-fighting the Civil War divides us in the face of the enemy.
People who sport bumper stickers like the one quoted are playing into the hands of our enemies. I very much doubt that Gen'l R.E. Lee would put such a sticker on his vehicle if he were alive today. |
