I'm working on a ST TOS style model Phaser mod like that.

However, I want a circle of diodes, maybe six of them.  Power supply is still an issue.  Plus, getting the diodes to line up will require replacing the center part with a machined aluminum piece.

So how long before they get into the 100 watt pulsed range?

The eye hazards involved are enough that I really want no part of this except to watch safely through a computer monitor.

It doesn't take much laser power to ruin your vision.   Be extremely careful and then be MORE careful.  Don't just follow the four

rules of firearms safety,  add a fifth rule:  Be aware of reflective surfaces and the angles of reflection that are possible with them.

Now add a sixth rule:  Wear protective laser goggles of an APPROPRIATE type.

I didn't even consider that. Good thing I'm not motivated enough to try this.

I bought that gadget from Wicked Lasers, when it was all the rage here.
To be on the safe side, I ordered two extra sets of safety glasses after I got it.

They were two different colors.
 Bummer.
On realiziing that some guy in some shipping department overseas doesn't really give a damm if I fry my eyes, I put that thing away.

In less than the blink of an eye.  In a flash.  Faster than you can react.

It would not totally blind you that quickly, but it would instantly spot burn your retina where the beam landed,

and where your retina gets burned,  that shall be a black spot in your vision for the rest of your life.

The eye-safe limit for lasers is not much over 5 milliwatts.   I once had a green 50 mW laser beam flash across one

eye, going by VERY quickly, and the spot I got in my vision lasted for half an hour at least.  No permanent damage was

done, but it was a very near thing, I do believe.

What happens when you get a temporary spot in your vision from looking at a bright light source is that the photosensitive

chemicals in your retina, which are constantly being depleted by exposure to light,  and replaced,   get deeply depleted by

brighter lights, and it takes a while for the chemicals at that spot to be fully replenished.

If the spot in your vision doesn't go away in a day,  it never will.  At that point you have retinal burn damage and it's permanent.

That 50 mw laser could do that, if allowed to shine into your eye for more than a tiny fraction of a second.   A 1 watt laser

would burn your retina in a fraction of a millisecond.

Am I the only one who got interested when the cat came on screen?

Wonder how many burn marks the guy has on the carpet, walls, and wood floor?

With a laser like that, light colored surfaces won't scorch as easily. Notice that all the balloons were black and the match heads took a few seconds to flare up. I'm sure drywall and carpet would scorch, but it would probably take a few to several seconds of lasing to make it happen.

lets say...its 20 years into the future. getting blinded by a laser is not a major deal since you can buy a fresh Chinese eye on the open market.

so what are the dynamics of making the enemy go blind when you attack them with lasers ? i would assume one would have to borrow some elements of sniper craft. getting within laser range like...3 miles, observe enemy, and then "click, eyeball shot" is it that easy ?

I'm no expert on the subject (and I don't particularly care) but I'm pretty sure that would somehow be a violation of the Geneva convention.
