I had two M4 type builds that needed to be zeroed at 50 Meters. A Stag H2 with the supplied MI BUIS and an Armalite M4 LEC with a AA Eotech.  I'm a member of a local club that charges $15.00 a year to use the range.  It is primarily a Trap range, but they have some target stands for handguns, rifles and slug guns as well.

I zeroed the MI BUIS on the Stag with some vintage Win Q3131.  It took 12-clicks right of windage correction. No trouble adjusting the elevation inspite of Stag's use of a non F-Marked front sight base.  Extraction and ejection were positive with the Q3131 5.56mm ammo inspite of Stag's use of a blue extractor spring insert.

I zeroed the Eotech on the Armalite with the same Q3131 ammo. 10-shot groups from prone at a 50-yard target measured under 2"  I was happy with 4MOA from a dot sight carbine. My 40-year old eyes probably couldnt do better than that without a magnified optic.

After both carbines were zeroed I tested some new Center industries USGI Mags I picked up at the gun show last weekend.  Snap shooting at paper plates stapled to the 25-meter and 50-meter stands.  All three mags functioned 100% when loaded to 28 rounds.  Ammo tested was Winchester 55Gn JSP, Q3131 and SA M1A3. The mags, ammo and carbines all ran 100% today. Even had the range to myself which is the best thing about private ranges on "work" days.

I apologize in advance to any trap, skeet, or sporting clays shooters who suffer seizure, heart attack, hives, or bowel distress over the idea of centerfire rifles on the "skeet" range.

Why is that?

Because that setup is totally unsat for a center fire rifle backstop.  I can't tell what is behind them in the trees but only a slight change in the angle of the barrel and rounds are going to be skipping off into the trees.

I would ask the club's insurer if they would be happy to cover the liability on that setup.

So, shooting at tires is not the problem, its the lack of a berm or suitable backstop?

The tires are not the backstop.  The tires are target stands (tires filled with sand in front of V shaped concrete walls with a steel face). Anything that goes through those or misses those hits the 30' dirt berm those shrubs behind the 100-yard line are growing on.  Anything that misses that goes into about a mile of corn field.

The range has been there since the 60's. My grandfather was one of the founding members and I've been shooting there over 20-years. I've never heard of any sort of firearms related accident or incident there though I cannot say with 100% certainty there has never been a bullet strike on a barn on the other side of the country mile.

I've seen people shooting on farm land with nothing but crops or trees for a backstop. This range has tires, sand, concrete, steel and an earthen berm. If thats unsafe then no range is "safe."

Same question.  I could imagine birdshot or maybe buckshot bouncing off and comming back at the shooter. Is there some other issue with tires?  They seem to be very common in range construction, especially shoot houses.
