No I just choked the F%^k out of it

I would have killed it, but he was in his cage minding his own business until I started messing with him.

I got what I deserved, it was a Yellow Rat Snake so all it did was bleed a little

Then he made a poor tactical decision. He should have slit it open and made a hat from the skin. Wearing said hat would have been ample warning to the others. Plus he would have had a cool hat.

I'll add a couple of random work pics if you don't mind. See any interesting wildlife in the swamp? Yesterday a guy at work was telling me about his buddy who had a tick crawl into his urethra and dig in, did you double check that

Next time skin the snake and wear its skin so you can infiltrate the nest and then call in an air strike so they can nuke it from orbit.

But chickens peck.

I don't know why, but I never get sick of your pics. It must be because you are out and about everyday while the good majority of us sit in an office typing away staring out of the window.

Dammit I tell ya, I should have joined the Army instead of the Air Force. Damn damn damn.

thanks for the link.

Yep I just got certified on the non-venomous snakes.

I still have a bit before I handle any snakes that can do real damage.

Man if I had the Tomahawk you made me with me I would have chopped his head off.

He's a good snake, my 1SG had just handled him and I guess he didn't want to be played with any more.

when I was at flight school in PCOLA 2005-06 I was with some buddies when this little blue ford ranger blew a tire in front of us so we stopped to help...the dude was an Army Captain doing training down there and he had his Company waiting on him at some boat ramp on the right side if you are headed towards Destin. He didnt have a spare so he just threw his ruck and a big hiking stick like the one in that picture in the back of my Jeep and we drove him to the ramp. when we got there his guys were all in formation with their rucks and gear and shit...the watched their CO roll up in a jeep full of Marines all covered in Corps stickers and moto tats. His first Sgt came up laughing and said " Jesus christ Sir..it would be a bunch of fuckin Jarheads wouldnt it, He thanked us and we rolled out. The best was I had a horn that played the Marines hymn out of a little bullhorn speaker....I hit it on the way out...that moment alone was worth the 100 bucks I spent on that stupid fucking horn...LOL......You dont know that Captain do you?? he was about 5'8" and dark complexion like Italian or something.. that shit was funny..

Free - so you aren't handling these yet?

So what's up with rangers and snakes? Is it for safety training or pets?

They run a reptile center at Camp Rudder as part of the incoming safety brief for swamp phase. Members of Charlie Company get trained in handling reptiles and run the reptile center, doing demonstrations for every Ranger class and during public demonstrations (such as the annual family day open house, which is where the pictures I posted of RI's handling rattlesnakes came from). Of course, that doesn't mean Rangers don't like to play with snakes anyway...

As long as they are not playing hide the snake...

couple of good friends recently went through, I should ask if they remember you - one guy got injured and didn't make it, the other did.
Link Posted: 11/2/2009 1:05:55 PM EST
Ok so what did I miss?

The Army has a snake handling course? I guess it makes sense since you'd come across them....anywhere, but I suppose I just had no idea there were official schools for that.
Link Posted: 11/2/2009 1:06:11 PM EST
Seriously.. So why exactly are those rangers dealing with large ass snakes?

So out of curiosity, what's your opinion of the ACU's?

It looks to me like there's still some green where you are. How well do they work?

It doesn't look like it works too well in the second and third pic, but the fourth pic with you guys on the rafts the uniforms seem to take on a brownish hue and blend a little better.

If they are as bad as I think they are, how do you guys stay hidden with such a badly colored uniform?

I hope I make it to Ranger School while you're still a RI.

Doubt it will happen though. I've got at least 5 years before that happens.
Link Posted: 11/2/2009 2:25:25 PM EST
Years ago an instructor at Ft Benning told our IOBC class that in the entire 200 year history of the US Army, only one soldier ever died from a snakebite. The other 2,000 died from the poison.

The bottle was there to provide scale as to the size of the snake. And I'm not a Ranger :-) My brother is one of Free's fellow RI's, in a different company.

I had almost forgotten.

I was still in the South Carolina Corps of Cadets at the time. CPT Palmer was a Citadel grad, and Echo Taps was played for him in the barracks that night.

Its just a class they receive in Ranger school.

The students don't get taught to handle snakes, its just a intro to the kinda snakes they may see while out in the woods/swamps of florida.

One guy died in the class before mine of kidney failure.

One died in the class before from falling off the tower on the slide for life over the pond. The first few feet are over land, and that is where he landed.

Nobody died in my class.

OP––-you are waaaay too skinny to ever be an RI in the mountain phase. I'm pretty sure the RI's up there have 20-pounds of blueberry pancakes in them at any given time.
