It's actually the raised area around the mag release button.  For whatever reason some people make a very big deal about it either being there or not.  I have many AR's some fenced some not.  Never had any problems either way.  The only thing to keep in mind is that if you change out your lower parts set on a unfenced lower with newer parts, you may have extra thread protruding from your mag release.

Other than that it is really a non issue.  That's probably why you couldn't find much info.  It is mostly a big deal in a few small minds.
