In my mind, I thought I had a rough day. I met some friends at the bar and received a phone call that, once again, reminds me of the fact that I endure no (as in NONE, ZERO) hardships compared to our fighting men and women.

My brother called and was distraught. His high school pal and teammate from various sports, a fellow our family has known for years, was killed in Iraq.

While I am able to meet with friends and whine about petty nonsense at work, folks like him were or are out busting their asses so that people like me can complain about worthless things.

Once again I am humbled by the weight of such a loss on a small town and an equally small family.

Jason leaves behind very few family members... I know only of his sister and that his parents have already passed. I hope that our collective prayers are with her at this time.

Killingworth Soldier killed in Iraq

I can only offer my thoughts and prayers and hope others do the same. I will share his memory with my students in high school tomorrow in hopes that they can understand and respect the situation that so many families have found themselves in.

I have been to 4 wakes/funerals in the past few weeks. Even though I have not seen Jason in years, I know his ceremony is going to turn me into a teary-eyed buffoon in short order.

Raise your glasses, gentlemen, for a man far better than myself.

I have to wonder, "how many of those men do we have left, and how many more do we need?"

Update:

A colleague has contacted some folks still in the sandbox and Jason reportedly died in a base accident in which a truck backed over him.

That is not to say any fewer glasses should be raised, and I thank you folks for extending your thoughts and prayers.

I never know what to say to this sort of news. May GOD comfort his sister and his fellow warriors.

Small update,

I've spoken with former teacher's from Jason's high school and friends... everyone is upset, and understandably so. My brother is devastated as they were quite close.

I never knew how hard this would hit a small community.

Comments from everyone he has touched have been pouring into his Myspace page.

Lucky for me, my man is a last resort for the government. He tried to enlist, but they told him that with his back (fused vertebraes), and his ankles (broke them both badly a few years ago), they couldn't use him. He was pissed, I was glad. h
