Odd... those things are supposed to be IR. Unless the black dude's hands are room temperature... I can't think of why it wouldn't work.

Doesn't look like the black guys had was directly under it quite like the white guys hand was.

Simple... Black absorbs light, white reflects it.

Yep. Totally fake.

Except the sensor window is the dark oval under the 'TC'. Should have picked up either hand position.

Some IR sensors on flush valves won't pick up dark colored shirts very well. Ever walk away from an automatic urinal and it didn't flush? If you're wearing dark colors that's usually why. Could be the same thing here, though his skin color doesn't appear to be very dark.

Some newer sensor faucets are using "capacitive field" technology instead of IR to solve problems like this.

Secret government Skin-reflectance Test trial?

I hate those electronic eyes that they put on faucets, soap dispensers and paper towel dispensers. They never work. I tend to wave my hand around frantically until it turns on.

We have a 3d laser scanner at work that we use with a cad program. We use it to mill insoles. Use light pink instead of standard dark blue for our impression kits, because the blue absorbs light and won't scan. It appears invisible. You can get it to work by lifting it about 1/2 inch or more from the scanner and shining a light onto the impression, however some darker spots will still be invisible.

This is probably similar technology used in many laser scanner devices. You can see videos where certain techs can't pick up black faces but they can pick up white faces.

Contrast is the key. Dark on dark may not be picked up by some 3d laser scanners, white against dark or white against neutral will(since the color you see is actually that portion of the light spectrum being reflected back to your eye).

Beyond stupid, those devices are ubiquitous in restrooms and 87% of the time they work inconsistently.

I'm white, my success rate with those kind of soap dispensers and faucets is right around 50%.  They suck for everybody, regardless of skin color.

Not that kind of IR.

It's a reflective beam and sensor.  More like a TV remote.

The emitter is just an LED that's constant-on.  The sensor picks up IR light scattered off objects, and triggers the circuit when it senses a high enough change in intensity (caused by an object being closer to it).

Whiter skin reflects more light, and darker skin absorbs more.  If the skin is dark enough and it doesn't reflect enough light to trigger the sensor, then the circuit won't fire.

He should try using a fingernail, palm of the hand, etc.  Or any available light colored object like a paper towel.

Failing that, shoot a TV remote at it.    (Now everyone is going to go fuck with the AutoSoap with a TV remote. )

LMFAO.

I get the idea behind those things, but I hate it when I don't use the force well enough to get a fucking paper towel.

I find that I have more trouble with these sensors when my hands are wet. Which renders the automatic paper dispensers and dryers worthless.

He found his problem was the he was black, and the sink was racist. Sinks pick and choose, son. Pick and choose.

That is pretty funny and fucked up too.

lol  that's pretty funny.

my dad's roommate in college was convinced my dads betta fish was racist.  if a white guy would put his hand by the tank the fish was fine. If the black guy put his hand on the tank the fish would freak out and puff up and want to fight. Not realizing his hand was dark enough to create a mirror effect so the fish could see itself.

he left school convinced that was the most racist fish ever.

Is there a time limit between soap ejaculations?

A soap dispenser refractory period?
