Christmas shopping for myself and wondering if its worth the coin.
Link Posted: 12/10/2013 4:33:30 PM EST
Hell yeah.
Link Posted: 12/10/2013 4:35:14 PM EST
other option is a centurion 10" C4
Link Posted: 12/10/2013 4:36:52 PM EST
Only difference between the DD and the Centurion is how it mounts to a barrel nut. I have a 12 inch Centurion and it's great. Cheaper than the DD was.

I like them. I have the short MK18 one for my 10.5 blackout, and the standard RIS II on my one of my favorite ARs.
My favorite "traditional" FF quad rails.

ETA: My brother in law has a couple of the Centurion rails, they're very nice, and I was jealous at how easily they mounted.

DD: I see a clone in your future.

Otherwise, not so much.

Link Posted: 12/10/2013 6:36:10 PM EST
Yes. Mine gets here tomorrow...I'll have everything I need to complete my CQBR/MK18 clone.

Try Primary Arms, got mine for ~$320.

Poll for this?
Link Posted: 12/10/2013 6:43:48 PM EST
Which is heavier? I vote for the Centurion. Easy installation, cheaper.
Link Posted: 12/10/2013 7:00:34 PM EST
MK18 just because.
Link Posted: 12/10/2013 7:02:13 PM EST
Im getting a 12.5 JP for my bday (11.5in barrel). Should be able to just barely see flash hider.....
Will hide the mount of my suppressor under the rail.

DD is 3 ounces heavier but uses proprietary barrel nut. 11.4 oz for Centurion since it uses existing standard nut, 15.5 DD.

I'd go DD, but I'm biased because I really like the way they look & work. But the Centurion certainly isn't a bad choice at all.

I've had this potato for several years now, no complaints, had something on every inch of rail at one time or 'nother

classy & has history, but I think it is long in the tooth. the C10 is a tier above.

I've got the mk18 RIS and a 12" Centurion C4.

You're not getting any more quality in one over the other (though, The centurion will come with built in QD swivel cups).

The RIS IMO is all about the aesthetics and military background, that's where the price is coming from. Centurion makes a great rail and I like my C4 over all DD rails I have ever owned (Omega, Omega X, Lite, and RIS ii).

ETA: I picked the RIS in your poll, btw. At the length you're looking at and this sounding like it's for an SBR, RIS is my choice.....just cus.

Oh yeah, forgot about the Centurion swivel points, which I also liked. ( but they aren't steel lined.)

I think the Centurion is a good looking rail, but I prefer the weird brown color (FDE, sorta) and the way the RIS II looks. If you measure & space right, you can get your (AAC, anyhow) suppressor mounted so it looks like it grows out of the rail as well.
You're right though. It really does come down to looks now for me, although when I bought the DD rails the Centurions didn't exist.

I'm bitten by the slim keymod bug now, and like Noveske & love the Geissele rails much more than I do the RIS II, though.

From what I gather, they are great rails. Don't own one yet, but am in the process of building a MK18 and M4A1 block II

strictly for printer repairmen, holmes.
Link Posted: 12/11/2013 3:41:42 AM EST
first off I'm not going for a clone.

Also the color of the rail is irrelevant to me, just looking for a solid 9.5-10" rail.

The price difference between the two would allow me to get the C4 and ammo OR the C4 and a new BCG. - or just the RIS II.
Link Posted: 12/11/2013 3:53:24 AM EST
Is the RIS II compatible with the AA gas piston?

Do you "need" rails on all sides? I've switched to the more "modular" rails that are slick so that I can place rails where I need them...

They tend to be lighter weight and have a thinner profile.

Check out the Centurion CMR and the Noveske NSR.

No, I have zero need for rails all around.

I have my TLR at 12 o'clock and run a cut down moe VFG as a handstop on my Alpha / VTAC now. I'm going to see if it will work with my suppressor / mount here in the next couple of weeks, if it does then I'm good to go.

I have a DD RIS II mk18 and have other rails also. The DD RIS II mk18 has a extremely well designed and sturdy method of mounting the rail to the barrel nut. I have seen some rails that use an extremely poorly designed and weak method of mounting the rail to the barrel nut. This is something you need to check when purchasing a rail.

Since you recommended the Geissele MK4 I think you mistook my meaning.

I was inferring that modular FF rails, like those from Geissele, MI, etc. are where it's at, as compared to larger, heavier setups with four full length rails.

The Centurion & DD MK18 RIS are really light, close to the weight of the Geissele MK4 of similar length.
The Geissele is my favorite rail now, though.

MK18 rail is worth the money. I had been planning on getting one from the start of my current 10.5 build, ended up buying a LaRue 10.0 ONLY because it was a deal I couldn't pass up. Had the larue not been so cheap, i would not have complained about buying a MK18 RIS II at normal market value.
