No one who has ever bought and used a Valentine, complains about them, AFAIK.

i hate my Escort S2, V1 is the way to go.
Link Posted: 4/18/2008 2:00:30 PM EDT
If I were to buy one, I would get a Valentine.

Laser Jammers are the way to go.

Bought my Valentine 1 at least 10 years ago. Still works great but even better I can upgrade it. Send it in an will get a completely new unit (for $189)

valentine1.com/upgrades/proposal.asp

Status Report on Your Valentine One
Serial Number 32909xxxxxx

V1 Description: Radar circuitry known in-house as V1.7 gives high performance on all radar bands. Also,it remembers your “mode” setting when shut off. Has stack of four LEDs on front panel for band identification. Front and rear laser.

Upgrade Recommendation: While this version is not quite up to today’s V1 standard for Ka, it’s almost always good enough, and always better than detectors from other makers. X and K performance is excellent. Upgrading merely to improve radar performance is not cost effective, in my opinion, unless you’re concerned about the POP Mode operating in your area. Upgrading does bring other benefits, including our latest laser warning (front and rear), which outperforms the competitors by a wide margin, and POP Protection. Also, you'll get the new Euro Mode.

How's that for honesty?

If I upgrade, here's what I get:

Upgrade Proposal for Your Valentine One
Serial Number 32909xxxxx

Our Instant Upgrade* will make the following improvements to your V1.

Our best Ka-band performance, including full "superwide" coverage (33.4 - 36.0 GHz), today's long range, much better resistance to Ka false alarms, and POP Protection from MPH BEE™ III and Enforcer™ radars.
Our best X-band performance.
Our best K-band performance including POP Protection from MPH Enforcer™ radars.
Adds radar coverage on Ku-band (used in Europe).
Adds our latest laser warning, front and rear while reducing the "thickness" of your V1.
Adds False-Alarm Retraction to notify you when V1 finds that an alert in progress is false; also terminates the alert.
Adds Euro Mode which adapts V1's radar sensitivity to the way radar is used for photo enforcement in Europe.
Latest windshield mount with new suction cups.
Latest visor mount.
New Lighter Power Adapter with mount for Concealed Display.
New Direct-wire Power Adapter.
New coiled cord.
New straight cord.
New wiring-harness connector.
Dual-Lock® fastener.
New Owners Manual.
Spare fuse.
Spare suction cups.
One-year limited warranty, same as new units.

*INSTANT UPGRADE: As soon as we receive your old unit (in operable condition with no tampering of the serial number) we’ll exchange it for a brand-new, current-production V1. This is our way of assuring you’ll be without V1 protection for the shortest time.
PRICE: $189 plus shipping

V1 and a laser jammer
Link Posted: 4/18/2008 2:11:11 PM EDT
V1 is instant win.

FWIW I just installed several thousand dollars of what I consider bullshit laser jamming and radar dectector crap in someone's car.  My V1 will still own his ass all day long for detection.

I run into more non-skille opponents blasting down the road with radar running full blast than I do the skilled ones.  And laser jamming works great. I have the passport SRX. Its the best thing out.

Agreed. The S2 does not work very good. What do you expect out of a battery powered unit? Buy a cord for it and see how much better it does.  Escorts 8500 and 9500 are much better.

It's not cause your super duper laser jammer radar detector, its cause most patrol officers have better things to do than traffic

If you can afford it.  Locking out false signals is a great feature, but it's expensive.

Knowing which direction the signals are coming from is even more useful.

Tell that to the highway patrol around here.

I've got a K40 from a friend's Porsche (he removed it when he sold the car) and it's just sitting. It's supposed to be really nice and he liked it, but I haven't done anything with it yet.

Anyone want to buy a K40?

Bel STi Driver, truly the cat's ass.

...but I'm sure it's useless against the mad skillz of the uber-leet traffic kops

Cops seem to like to point out that if there is no one else on the road for miles and miles, and the cop is just sitting there hiding and waiting for you to be in range before ever activating the RADAR, that a RADAR detector may not prevent them from getting a speed reading on you.

Of course, if you live in a city where cops seem to just have their built-in RADAR on constant-emission mode, and you just want to help make sure that no cops are around before you do a burnout or something, I think they may have some merit.

In my experience, with the high traffic around the DFW area, people seem to hit their brakes when they see a cop, causing cars WAY behind them to have to slow down so that pretty much everyone is doing about the speed limit before they ever get up to where the cop is hiding.

Stay w/i 5 mph of the speed limit and save your $$$$.  Stopping a car for speeding w/ a radar detector brings a smile to my face

I've always been interested in that, but I've never had a problem finding the source after an alert.  Unless the car has a ton of blind spots.   Most cases the source is always in front of me.

-1.

You instant-on that radar on the guy in front of me, and I'll know...  And I drive a lot in heavy traffic, so your variable power range won't do much good either.  You'll still clock the guy a few cars ahead, and I'll know in time to slow down.  It won't save me every single time, but often enough to be worth it.  Plus, mine screams at me when there's an emergency vehicle coming, which is very handy when Crowbar is cranking through the stereo.

Never tried a jammer, so I have no idea 'bout those.

to the OP:  The only people who will tell you radar detectors don't work are cops that don't want you to use them.  People that use them regularly, and own quality detectors, will tell you otherwise.  Trust those who use them, not those who wish you wouldn't.

The speaker on mine is acting up, but for the money paid it is a damn fine unit.

Too bad jammers are illegal in Oklahoma.

I quit using one about 10 years ago.  I have found that driving with the flow of traffic or keeping to within 10 MPH of the speed limit is a good way not to get a ticket.

Tried a V1, didn't really think the arrows were that great. I can see how some might like it...I do not.

Radar detectors, meh. I prefer just getting away from the cops via brute strength:

I am a drinker of the Valentine Kool-Aid times two.
That being said, If I ever have to buy again, Bell had one I was interested in a while back. Forgot name.
The direction signals on the Valentine are, however, a major selling point for me.
I drive fast, like all the inevitable "go the speed limit" posters love to hate, and have got one ticket with the Valentine in more than 10 years. I was in a very tight little speed trap town and got popped with instant on right past the lower speed limit sign.

ETA: The arrows let you know when you are past..you can't always see 'em. Having that and the "bogie" count has saved me many times. When I would have normally put the peddle down, I've seen that there are one or two units yet to pass me.

All you guys that preach speed limits...Get a life, go crap in another thread.

Just as info...the Passport can count bogies also.

I got more tickets (I almost lost my stinking license) with a radar detector in the car than I ever got w/o one... I don't use one and I haven't gotten a ticket in 8yrs.

Learn where they hide, look for the likely places, pay attention and you can avoid getting nailed, don't speed to excess... Here if the limit is 70mph, they usually won't write you if you are going with the flow and keeping it under 80mph.

BTW: If your laser detector goes off, your speed has just registered on the laser gun... My buddy's has some MAD fucking range if you brace it on his patrol car. The inside of his new car looks like something out of Star Trek, bitch still has to sit on his ass all day
