Some construction company working on the beach here in the Netherlands.

Operators got out safe but both machines were lost.

Quicksand used to be a staple in 70's tv shows like The Incredible Hulk, Dukes of Hazzard, A-Team, etc.

As a kid I was certain that I would meet my doom from quicksand and that a vine would be just out of reach and my baseball hat would be mute testimony of my demise.

I seriously worried about that!

I was born in 1971.
As a kid, I always thought quicksand was going to be a MUCH larger problem in my adult life than it is.

I was walking a newly cut logging road one day deer hunting. I saw a small mud puddle and stepped over it to "dry looking" ground. Next thing I knew I was waist deep in sand! I grabbed a nearby tree and pulled out. Don't know if I really hit the bottom or not. Glad that tree was there!

It was apparently all over the old west as well according to all of the westerns.  Yep, I grew up worrying about it as well.

Beaches and tidal zones make great places to lose heavy equipment.

Several years ago we bushwacked back old logging roads to the shore of a lake way up in Quebec. Nice cove with a sandy beach, a strip with just enough rock to make it safe to launch the boats.

As we were looking it over and lining up the best way to back the first boat in my oldest son stepped onto the sand and went in up to his waist!

There was a beaver dam about 10' back from the shore edge and about 4' high. Apparently the seepage from the dam traveled under the rocks and then up through the sand. It was just freaky.

I know it exists in the dry river sections of the Mojave River because I had to help a neighbor dig out his Bronco II after it sank up to the tops of the tires when he stopped on what looked like a dry sand bar.

There's a good stand up bit about quicksand but for the life of me I can't remember who it was. Basically the same thing "growing up I expected it to be a much bigger problem than it is"

So do they just leave those machines there or is there a way to recover them?

I would think the enviro-nazies over there would have a problem with the fuel and oil possibly leaking out.

ETA WTF were they doing out there anyway?

This, I suspect it wasn't quick, but slow enough there was almost enough warning, but by the time you catch on it's to late.

1969 model year, but yeah this!

I'm not sure if I feel let down about the distinct lack of opportunity to put my escape plans into action or relieved. I do know I've never had to yet!
