I am not a dealer, but an LEO. If selling via the net or to someone not in person, I would strongly suggest that you get a copy of an ID if selling as an individual, if selling as a dealer, a copy of a letter is probably a good idea, if it is not a legal mandate, which it may be. Unless I am mistaken it is also a felony for the seller to sell or provide those mags to non-LEOs so it is a seller problem also. I am not aware of anyone that checks the sale of mags, but I would make sure that I sole them to LEOs just to CYA. It is, however done all the time, both online and off........the sale of the mags to individual officers, just make sure who you are selling them to in order to cover yourself.

He's on the money. As an aside around here the LEO mags show up at every gunshow. People buy then up and hide them deep, I suppose. The funny thing is most of them come from LEO's that buy something and them decide to sell it. They don't have other mags, so they sell them with the gun. I've bought a few from pawn shops that did'nt realize they had them until they went to sell them. I get them right because they want rid of them anyway.

When you say "LEO mag" what do you mean? A high capacity post ban mag? Also, there is no general method to recognize these, is there? I've never seen a date nor seldom a serial number on mags.
What we need is some method to keep innocent citizens from inadvertently buying or selling these. I suggest that LEO mags be painted in light and dark blue stripes as a reminder of what the unauthorized owner may face. This would also make them easy to identify. [:)] |

Restricted post-ban hi-caps are marked with manufacture date and/or "For LEO/Gov't/Export Use Only". The ban went into effect on 9/13/94.
From the BATF FAQ: [url]atf.treas.gov/firearms/faq/faq2.htm#o8[/url] O8) May law enforcement officers purchase and possess semiautomatic assault weapons and high capacity ammunition feeding devices? Yes. The law provides exceptions for law enforcement officers purchasing assault weapons and magazines [b]for official use.[/b] However, assault weapons may not be lawfully distributed to, or received or possessed by, an officer having been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence. A licensee may lawfully transfer these items to a law enforcement officer and the officer may lawfully receive and possess them if: (1) the officer is a "peace officer" having the authority to arrest persons for violations of the law and to obtain and execute search warrants; (2) the officer is employed by a government agency; and (3) in the case of a semiautomatic assault weapon, the officer has not been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence. BATF regs require that officers purchase restricted hi-caps on department letterhead that states that the mags are for a gun authorized and intended for duty use. Officers are not allowed to buy whatever mags they want in whatever quantity they want. Of course, many FFLs don't seem to understand this, or don't care and sell them anyway, even to non-LEOs, but they risk their license and jail, as to those who buy them this way. -Troy |

It would be best to get a letter from the LEO (on letterhead works better) and a copy of their ID. This should cover you. Or hell, call the dept and ask and talk to him, that may help any uneasy feeling that he is a fraud. Take care!

is there a picture of these somewhere? is it stamped on the baseplate or the mag body itself?
just wondering so i don't accidently buy some at a show sometime. |

On Glock mags its stamped on the back side of the mag ....if its a hi-cap and a LEO mag...you would have to be blind not to notice it on them...it's that obvious.....not hidden at all!

The law specifically states that post-ban hi-caps carry BOTH the manufacture date (mm/yy) AND a warning such as "For LEO/Gov't/Military/Export Use Only." Many USGI manufacturers had already been dating their mags. Anything marked 09/94 or earlier is preban; anything marked 10/94 or later is postban and restricted.
Note, though, that Center Industries is NOT adding the "For LEO..." warning verbage on their mags. As a result, some dealers sell them to unsuspecting folks as prebans, which clearly they aren't. Even worse, some guys have ground off, filled in, or otherwise obscured the date stamp and refinished the mags, making it more difficult to tell. They usually re-seal the original bags and sell them as NIW prebans. Know where the markings should be, and know that ALL Center mags have the date stamp and Center's CAGE code (6P199) stamped on them. If you don't see these markings on Center mags, beware.
