For both insurance and common sensical reasons, get her something underpowered. Teenagers are the least experienced drivers but yet are the ones who exhibit the most bravado behind the wheel.

However, knowing what I know now I'd have to go with a used mid size compact no more than 5 yrs old. One which I felt comfortable doing the majority of work on. |

I think Grim's suggestion is pretty good...otherwise I would recommend an old Volvo 240 or 740, both underpowered, tanks, and reasonably priced. You can expect, with good maintenance, to get 300k out of them.
Volvo is very safety oriented, I would think a plus given that this is for your child. |

A used but serviceable full sized 2WD pickup truck, preferably underpowered. It will be more survivable in the inevitable wreck and assuredly lacks "cool". The lack of "cool" coupled with the lack of seating space will lead to a lack of partying which which leads to a non-wrecked truck and no DUI which is a desirable outcome. Furthermore if you don't have a truck in the family, now you do. The underpowered part is an asset in that racing is less likely to occur, even with a congenital idiot boyfriend behind the wheel. The lack of DUIs coupled to a lack of speeding tickets will lead to lower insurance costs. I think I covered everything. Oh yeah! No back seat.

True, but in most states carrying people, especially minors, in the bed of a truck will get you pulled over pronto which ends the festivities. If you explain to your kid in a passive fashion that carrying in the rear would be a blazing invitation to be pulled over they will probably not do it. Sort of the way that I got people to not try to ride in my PU as a boy, "Listen dude, I would take you guys in the bed, but if you fell out and went under my tires when your bones broke they would poke holes in the rubber, and I just got these tires." This would end debate usually. Of course I am cognizant that kids are idiots, I just think the PU minimizes the chances for them to be idiots. |

My only suggestion is something with a manual transmission. It amazes me how many people these days don't know how to drive one, male and female. It just seems safer to know how to drive any vehicle in case of an emergency or something.
Edited to add: Also, if ever she gets into burning the rubber off the wheels, clutches are usually cheaper than automatic tranny's ;) |

Statistically we all total our first cars. You don't want it to be a Lexus wrapped around a tree. But you also want to avoid the econo boxes to keep the post collision medical bills to a minimum. Yugos may be cheap but funerals aren't. |

Get her a mid to late 70's chevy or ford or dodge 4 door huge sedan. they have V8's but they are so smogged out that they aren't really too powerful but enough if she needed to get out of her own way sometime. if she gets into a crash it is big enough it will protect her or if she needs to ram another car if she needs to get out of a bad situation.

Second what Firearm Tom just said. Both me and my sister paid for our first cars. (I sold my first car to my sister, and that was her first car. She wrecked it two days after buying it from me!)
Dad always helped with loans, but we, in no uncertain terms, were expected to pay him back, and SOON. When we wrecked our vehicals, he loaned us his, against his better judgement, of course. In fact, I learned how to drive his standard as mine was getting towed to the shop. [BD] |

I recommend honda civic, honda accord or toyota camry. Doesn't matter if its brand new or used. They don't guzzle gas and on most part they are reliable. I also recommend suvs because I've personally been in several accidents with suv. SUV is no match against passenger car in an accident. SUV will walk away with scratch on the bumper while the passenger sustains few thousand dollars in damages. But SUV guzzles gas and is a high risk for roll over.

My daughter is approaching the driving age as well, so I've been giving this some serious thought. I'm not giving her my Chevy Caprice patrol car. The LT-1 V8 has more power than I need, let alone her. Maybe something gutless like a Ford[:D]...anyway, it will probably be a Volvo 240 sedan. Enough power to keep up with traffic, but she isn't going to get too carried away in it. It's built like a tank, and probably the safest car for it's size. They are cheap enough when you know what to look for in a used one.

Of course, that is our current hauling vehicle. She likes to take her horses with her when she can. I think it is too much of a party wagon. 4X4, room for 6, 8 or 9 if you are real friendly. my first daughter i gave her my old toyota truck,1 yr later i bought her a camaro.shes 21 now and hasnt been a wreck.(knock on wood).
2nd daughter i bought her a acura integra, we just came across it,i bought it because its a honda,thats what we were looking for. the camaro and acura had about 40,45k miles on them. i didnt want something to old. i dont want to work on them. both girls learned how to drive a stick shift first. 2nd daughter was in a wreck ,but it wasnt her fault. walter |

Easy. She is probably one of the absolute most important things in your life. Something with airbags. If you can afford, something with stability control. Something with some weight (statistics show small civic type cars kill much more than mid to full size cars in single car accidents). Something that can take a hit by a full size suv. I would HIGHLY recommend a BMW with 100k miles, small engine, or a VOLVO with 100k. Mercedes with 100k All are affordable.
You do want to giver her something she will take care of, and this means at least a little bit of cool. But no stangs, camaros, eclipses, civics (too small, same for accords). Might try a Maxima. Good deal, but a little fast. My wife was pregnant, hit the side of a car head on that pulled out in front of her at about 30-40. Airbags deployed, she was perfect, baby was perfect (only about 3 mo. preg). Also, her parents were hit with a pickup at 60, totally messed up their maxima, however, they were perfectly fine. Good luck, remember, keeping her alive and safe is your responsibility, and much more important than keeping her happy with you. HTH WL |

Within reason buy her the car she wants, not what you want. It will pay off in the long run. Less bitching and more pride in ownership. I bought both my boys the car I thought they should have. I had to buy them another car later to keep the peace in the house. If I had to do it over again I would set the price, maintain a veto and let them go find the car they wanted.

DO NOT BUY ANYTHING WITH BELT-DRIVE OVERHEAD CAMSHAFTS IN IT.CHAIN DRIVE CAMS OR WALK AWAY! Most people don't change the belts at 60K miles and when it goes, in a Honda you buy a NEW MOTOR! This is because the stupid Japs don't design piston to valve clearance. Moved the kid down here with me for collage & bought him a 2002 Ford Ranger 4x2. Cost me $11,070 before tax & plates with Ford's 2k rebate.Insurance is also low because its a truck not a unibody. Chose wisely , your child wellbeing is at stake.

I do believe that your Ranger has a belt driven OHC if it's the 2.3 or the 4.0. It's college, not collage. I have never seen a MOTOR have to be replaced because of a belt breaking, but I have seen ENGINEs have to be replaced. |

LARGE, VERY LARGE, so she has a chance in a crash. Econo boxes are killers! Equally good advice for adults.
POOR FUEL ECONOMY. Costs her enough for gas to restrict her driving somewhat. MPG is way over rated, actually, as that is a rather small part of total ownership cost. CHEAP as we know she WILL bend it. Low enough value that no collison insurance is required (or loan). Not needing other than liability insurance really keeps cost down. She needs to pay the insurance and replacement cost - will teach responsibility when she bends it. NO AIR BAGS, they kill smaller people and do lousy job protecting anyone. (Damn things are unhooked in ALL my vehicles!) MAKE HARD RULE that if you EVER even hear she has put the thing in gear without her seatbelt you take the keys for 30 days. Double it for each additional offense!! Same for MOVING violations. Buy lots of sleeping pills - for you. |

First off, if you can afford it, buy it for her and pay the insurance. Don't make her work, tell her you'd rather see her get good grades than working to be able to drive to work...
Second, get something solid. Find something nice but not too nice. If it is too nice, it will get vandalized. Personal experience. Find something with an airbag if she's not the dainty type (for example, a little bit more solid than the 5'1" and 110 pounds like my g/f). It's a sort of Jekyll/Hyde thing when the parents aren't around. I'm 18 and probably don't exhibit the most responsible driving, but i have never been in a crash, (never even a close call), and have never been ticketed. Third: AND THIS IS IMPORTANT!! Tell her "This is the only vehicle you get. It runs good. it doesn't have any dents. It should last you a looong time. If you f*ck it up, you don't get anything new." --It worked when my parents told me that a couple years ago... Make sure that you impress on her that NO ONE else drives it but her. Let me tell ya-it's easy to work around not having a back seat, pickup trucks DON'T solve that problem. |

V6 is a good comprimise. not overpowered but not underpowered. it can move when needed but that requires pedal to the metal.
my V6 firebird (insurance was cheaper on a 1994 firebird than a 1988 GMC Jimmy, my guess is safety gear, airbags, ect) costs 500/6mo for insurance. now granted this is because i got my license pulled for speeding... in the blazer which had trouble keeping 70(mannytranny) up a slight hill in 5th. it was a V6 as well, over/under powered really depends on the car itself.a v6 blazer is not a very fast car, it will move when kicked but that is not good to do all the time. my V6 firebird is much faster. because its gearing is setup for speed where-as the blazer was setup for power, blazer is 4WD. i totaled the first car i drove but didnt own it. V6 Jeep Cherokee 1984. it was raining i was doing 30 in the right lane of a 55 highway, most everyone was down to this speed. i hit a puddle i couldnt see the car was pulled over a embankment on the right. the front tires stopped the rear slid down the hill till i was turned 90 degrees. she slid down 10 feet. the rear stopped and the nose swung another 90 degrees so i was facing the way i came. now the nose hit a stump and the vehical rolled (45 degree or more incline) 1 full roll and came to a rest on its tires. ripped 3 off of the rims. engine was still running. damage was minor but enought to total it. every panel was dinged, most of the windows broken. and the right front corner of the engine compartment was crumpled a bit.(minor because the frame wasnt torqued at all) i walked away from this up the hill. across the highway(it had cleared up a good bit and i could see a long enough distance to be safe) and walked/ran across the highway to the car dealership (which ironcicaly sold Jeeps, thou its not where it was bought, bought it in NM) called home. "mom come get me i rolled the jeep in at the jeep dealer". i lived to tell about it. Firebird = Fun in the Sun Blazer = Fun in the woods Blazers have a nice folddown seat that opens up the back area for sleeping backs and.... mabey its not a good idea ;) |
