I have a pretty extensive collection, but am lacking a good .308 "battle rifle". I do have an M1 Garand, but not a box mag loaded 308 battle rifle.

I thought I had my mind set on a SCAR 17, but then I got to thinking that I could buy an FAL or M1A (or other M14 clone) plus a new PTR 91 for the price of a SCAR.

Does anyone have any thoughts? Is it worth it to get the SCAR, or two other of the classic 4 (FAL, M14, AR10, G3) "battle rifles"?

I like to shoot, but I'm also a collector, so it's not like I'm going to be putting thousands of rounds a year through any of these rifles.

Right here, except I'd go with the APC because of the new rail.

I have the EC and the ECC which I made into a complete M110K clone.

To brag a SCAR 17, to really brag and put your e-cock out a KAC SR-25. To be live in reality Armalite, S&W, RRA, and DPMS or other affordable AR-10.

SCAR 17 or any variant of the KAC SR25 line...quality over quantity
Link Posted: 11/4/2015 8:51:39 PM EST
I have grown very partial to the FAL. Just snagged a parts kit for $385. $300 for a receiver, a bit more for a couple of small parts, and borrow some tools, and I'll have another rifle. A build is not only rather satisfying, but still can save you a decent amount of money, and if done right you'll end up with a pretty decent rifle. Some parts come in a variety of forms, so you can also change some stuff up if you think you'll like the configuration better. For the price of a SCAR you could probably do three FAL builds, or one or two really nice builds with money to spare for ammo and/or magazines. If you like collecting, with the number of variants of the FAL out there it's definitely got some collectability. Of course, some people end up paying lots of money, such as for rare parts kits that cost more than a new rifle from DSA, to grow their collections.

I have an FN FAL 50.00 and an HK 91, but I would like to get a decent (not super pimpy) AR-10 next.

Two is one and one is none.

Not knocking the Scar 17, as if I had the cash to blow, I'd have one.

If I had the coin and the reason to buy one, I'd get one of those.

But I built a buddy a gun out of a Mega billet lower, a monolithic upper, and Rainiers ultra barrel that was a really nice shooter. Build?

The modern battle rifle should have never existed, at least not in 7.62x51 NATO.

Recoil and ammo weight are considerable penalties. They should have never been born after WWII.

I keep hearing that the SCAR is one of the best 308s out there, and like I said, I've got a pretty extensive collection in 5.56 and other guns.

I had my mind set on it, but I can't decide if I shouldn't just drop the coin on two other battle rifles. The PTR 91s look to be pretty decent guns, and I've noticed that DSA Para FALs can be picked up for way less than $2k.

Assuming that a new SCAR 17 is going to run $2500-2800, I could get two others good rifles for the same price.

I also have a soft spot for an M14 clone, but in that case I'd probably end up dropping some money on a Fulton Armory or try to find an old mostly USGI parts Springfield Armory. Not that the new Springfield Armory guns aren't nice, but I don't like the fact that they come with non USGI parts.....

ETA: I've also loosely considered the HK MR762, but I feel like that's a big chunk of change to drop when the SCAR 17 is substantially less money.

Armalite AR-10. My A4 20" stainless is one of the most accurate rifles I own.

If you are interested in an M14, take a look at LRB's products. They make hammer forged M14 receivers. They also sell complete rifles. I have two rifles built with LRB receivers, Criterion barrels and CMP M14 parts kits. I don't know if the CMP still offers the M14 parts kits, but the total cost was about $2k a few years back. Hope this helps.

I've used a FAL, 308 AK, M1A, and a DPMS. I'd love to own an example of each, but as a pure rifle, the DPMS Gen 1 in 308 was the best of the bunch, because I could easily add optics or change a barrel. The DPMS was better because it easily accepted my AR scopes, and was still very reliable.

For a collector, get a FAL. For the ultimate combat rifle, get a SCAR, but for a decent shooter for less money and more adaptability, get a DPMS. I did and it shoots 2" groups with privi ball ammo. The FAL and M1A have less recoil, but are not as modular for sights and barrel changes, so the DPMS wins out for being modular.

My personal experience is also that a 308 in a 16" barrel has a tremendous concussion, and I am happy to have a longer barrel. I understand that a 16" 308 will still reach out to several hundred yards just fine, but I do need to be able to hear and think afterwards, so I lean towards a longer barrel in 308.

You can shop around a get a DPMS 308 for a good price, and upgrade the trigger, stock and barrel when ever you feel like it.

I recently bought an M14, an FAL in nearly new condition would be my next acquisition, an AR10 old-style with the carry handle as part of the upper would be third.

I think I'm going to pick up an FAL at some point and then maybe grab an M1A or PTR-91. Hopefully I can find a good 18" Para model.

I can always pick up a SCAR 17 later down the line.

I'll probably wait a few months though, as I just blew my gun budget a few weeks ago with an MKE Mp5 and a Swiss 553, and tax stamps for both.

If and when you pick up that PTR add these necessities before you judge it too harshly:

Paddle Mag Release
Trigger Job
Magpul PRS Stock

It will make a world of difference.
