It's simple, if he's been officially employed in the US then somewhere he's committed fraud. Whether it included identity theft or not depends on how he did it, but there's essentially no way to live a "normal" life and have a career in journalism here as an illegal. Even if he just worked as a string and freelance he wasn't just getting handed cash.
