I must admit... I just finished watching a taping of "Rocks with Wings", and realized how much I truly love public television.

Problem, it is liberal as hell...

Sesame Street is the absolute devil, and I believe an indoctrination tool... It makes millions and millions in merchandising, yet we still fund its production?
Barney too...

Does anyone have any real opinions on public television? It's a real love/hate thing with me. Some of the programming is spectacular (Like POV), other stuff is leftist propaganda.

At one point GPTV had some local access shooting programms that were pretty good.  I found some nifty places to go shoot skeet in my area because of it.

But you are correct.  PBS can be leftist as hell but it all depends on who is making shows.  I view PBS (lately) as an extremeist outlet.  I have seen some scary shows on both sides.

Nova and Frontline are awesome.

They have cool science shows, and of course, This Old House...  all the rest is crapola.

YMMV

PBS shouldn't get [s]public[/s] federal/state/local tax funding.  Donations are just fine.  No problems until tax dollars are supporting it.  Keep it to donations only.

Nay for me. Just to many liberals like the MASH clan. In addition it tried to slander my profession. I have stopped watching it.

All my opinions are counterfeit.

But here it is anyway.

There is absolutely NOTHING on PBS that CAN'T be (and isn't already being) broadcast on all the other DOZENS of educational channels like Discovery, History etc.

PBS is a liberal's wet dream. A FREE conduit for propagating their crap without having to worry about how bullshitiotic it is or whether anyone's buying it.

It's having the Gov't pay for infotainment that can't support itself in the free market. Just like public funding of all "arts".

Pure socialism.

and of course...don't forget...'The Woodwright's Shop'

I met Roy Underhill this weekend in Orlando...super nice guy...you could talk to him for hours.  Nice to know there is someone promoting old fashioned values and hard work on PBS.

I like the low key delivery on most of the shows.

Agreed though, that no tax money should go to it, or a lot of other things. The government shouldn't need more than about 5% of anyone's $$$ to perform their constitutional mandate.

Unfortunately for PBS, someone realized that shows like Nova were their lifeblood, and made whole networks (discovery, tlc, etc.) that have taken over that market.

PBS is funded through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). The CPB was created by Congress in 1967 to receive federal money and use it to encourage noncommercial radio and television. The corporation, in turn, created PBS for television in 1969 and National Public Radio a year later. It reroutes the federal money to the services, supports programs and provides money to almost 1,000 local public radio and television stations.
About 18 percent of PBS' revenue comes from state governments and another 16 percent from the CPB and federal grants. Membership dues account for 23 percent of the revenue, according to the PBS Web site.

That is of the mindset that all which is good must somehow translate into money.
One could argue just as easily, on the same logical grounds,  that street cleaning and pothole paving is socialist too.
Neither are a necessity. All are quality of life issues.
To some (actually “many”, but however many people agree I don’t care), the arts are just as relevant and required quality of life issue as clean streets and smooth drives.

I agree, I think the arts, especially music, are very important. My only problem is with the public funding of "questionable" projects that are deemed art by the socialist pigs producing it.
Honestly, if an artist cannot get funding from private benefactors to produce his "art" then it's probably CRAP and doesn't deserve to be subsidized. That method would allow most every art form to exist, but weed out those maggot infested shreds of human debris who call themselves artists so as to avoid working for a living.

I love that Frontline show.  It's hard to imagine network tv doing a regular show like it, without breaking for commercials from sponsors.  It just wouldn't be the same. Plus Frontline is sometimes 60 minutes, sometimes 2.5 hours long depending on what's being produced. Very flexible and diverse in its topics.

Also, PBS got most of its federal funding slashed during Newt's "Contract with America" Congress.  Nearly all of their funding comes from corporations and "viewers like you" who dont mind subsidizing all the free riders. Bill Moyers probably doesn't like to admit that when he gets up on his high horse on his lame ass, smotheringly self-righteous show.

Where else could we get Britsh show like Monty Python, Benny Hill, and Red Dwarf?  Oh that's right BBC America on cable.

If they (PBS) wants to be public, then they can run on gifted $$ only.  Only then you will get great tv; when those who support get their say on what is shown.

No, not at all. I don't believe that that which is good is necessarily that which makes a profit.

But at it's core, socialism is an economic philosophy just as much as a political philosophy.

Gov't ownership of the press in any of its forms is just as socialistic as gov't ownership of the means of production. Even if it's just a little bit. It's still socialism. Shirley you remember that in Karl Marx's Communist Manifesto.  It's one of the "pillars" of Marxism.

One could try to argue that... but I wouldn't.

It's not logical because it's not factual.

Just because X may benefit society doesn't automatically put X within the realm of collective (i.e. Gov't) authority to get involved in.

Where's the logic (or constitutional support) for that?

Agreed - "some" do believe this. But I would HARDLY compare Gov't funded highway construction with Gov't funded Gay Ballet or dung-covered images of Mary.

Personally I like PBS and the Congress has shown that it can spend money on just about anything it pleases despite any rants by you.

That said; the information I posted was just that, information. It wasn't my opinion so try farting while facing a fan so it goes in the right direction(yours).

If taxes were about what I wanted, there'd be a lot less farm subsidies, and a lot more missions to Mars.

I got no problem with PBS, since at least there's some good stuff on there, and the government wastes 100 times as much money on completely worthless projects - and PBS/NPR is just a tiny drop in the bucket.

I like it.

There are some cool staple's like frontline,TOH,nova and new yankee workshop(that Norm Abrams is a badass!).

They have some cool specials/mini series too.

A couplea years ago they had this mini series called Battlefield(I wish I could find it on DVD)that was absolutly the best, most detailed WW2 European theatre documentary ever.It had very extensive animations to illustrate troop movements and dispositions and alot of fresh footage I had never seen.

Anyhow there is alot of crap to wade threw. You definatly have to pick your spots, but thats true with any network.
