Those appear to be Cobra's, either Marines or National Guard, hard to tell. The Army Cobras are a near black dark green . They use an IR suppressing paint, optimized for night flying. The interior of the cockpit is even darker, for contrast with lights that can be set to use NVG's without glare.

When I was in FL a couple weeks ago, I saw seven or eight helicopters (unidentified) flying in a formation like:

H--------------------H--------------------H--------------------H

----------H--------------------H--------------------H--------------------H

Of course, I was pretty close to Eglin, so...

It scared the hell out of me when I saw five Chinooks flying in an arrow formation right over my neighborhood, but apparently they were transporting Mr. President.

well, my tin-foil conspiracies were once again foiled by facts.

They were MARINES training at the SCLA and they were on their way back to 29 Palms.

The National Guard is flying all of the time right now. Linking their Guard duty flights with the cooperative efforts of State, Federal, and Local LEOs to find marijuana in corn fields. If you have any ag areas near you, no doubt that you'll see increased of helo patrols in your area.

CH-46 Sea Knight. I concur.

CH-46E or "Frog", CH-53's are "shitters, AH-1W's are "snakes", AH-1's are "heuys" AV-8B's are "lawndarts or buttdarts", the F/A-18's are also darts but also refered to as a "Hornet" (go figure) and -103's are "Hercs or Fat alberts" but this is coming from a Frog crewmember(6172).

Take your pick. They were probably either the H-53 based Pave Low's like my avatar, or the smaller H-60 based Pave Hawks flying out of Hurlburt Field.
Link Posted: 8/24/2004 9:04:31 AM EST
No, they are really out there. A few weeks ago a buddy and me were out in rural Virginia doing some shooting. Hear a helo coming and it cruises by at about 1000 feet. Blackhawk, no tail numbers, no markings; nothing. Oh yeah, and I'm sure it had nothing to do with us being about 30 miles from "The Farm".

Depending on which way the formation was flying in your diagram, it was either a staggered-right echelon formation or a staggered-left echelon.

And by the way, the MH-53 is absolutely the finest aerial platform I've had the pleasure to ride on.

Faster, longer range, more payload with up to 16 Hellfire missiles, 2 AIM-9 Sidewinders, and, of course, the 3-barreled 20mm cannon in the nose turret. It's also easier to maintain, more robust, and can be flown from either the front or the rear cockpit.

I get a chubby every time I see this thing

I ALWAYS loved the look of the Cobra.

You folks may laugh but, while on my way to a bike ride around Mugu Rock in SoCal I saw an Apache helo. Nothing to worry about you say? Well, this one was all dull black with no numbers or markings to speak of and flying about two hundred feet off the water. Now I admitt that I am within 100 miles of Hollywood. As you all know they film this stuff all the time so it may have been a false alarm on my part. I questioned my buds at the riding site and two of them had seen it as well. The rest said I needed to wear my tinfiol hat more.

I report, you decide!

Styk,

I didn't know you worked at the Depot. My best friend Joe's dad (Danny's friend) has worked there for many moons.

Ah, I have some shooting buds that are part of the test group. Last I had heard, testing was suspended due to the engine intake sucking up missle exhaust when they're launched....

I don't think yhe bottom pic is a .mil helo, to the best of my knowledge, we currently don't have anything in the inventory with a Fenestron tail rotor. Probably a local cop helo or mabye a news chopper.
