Recently I've noticed that one of the spool on either side of my torsion spring isn't winding up the steel cable properly.  So when it goes through a cycle of opening and closing, the cable will eventually not get wrapped up correctly in the grooves on the spool.  I've had to manually wind it up once already but it's already not winding correctly again.  Any ideas on what I can do to fix this correctly?

Update:  I went ahead and gave a service company a call.  With some more google-fu, one symptom of the take up spool/drum on either side not winding properly can be attributed to incorrect tension on the torsion spring.  And I agree with other folks here, if it involves torsion spring tension, I'm not touching it.  I was under the impression this could be resolved without messing with it, but doesn't appear to be the case for me.

Yup.  I do a lot of things myself around the house - plumbing, electrical, drywall, etc - but when my spring broke, I had an installer replace it.  Pretty crazy amount of energy stored in that spring.  When it broke, it sounded like a gunshot.

I have watched a couple pros and know how to do it.  I have done it.  Balancing both sides will have a learning curve for you, if you don't end up breaking an arm or getting killed.

More than one garage door pro has gone to calls to find the caller with an arm in a cast.

Please make sure to read the OP carefully.  I did NOT say the problem was with the torsion spring itself - the problem is with the spool on the side responsible for taking up the small steel cable on either side of the door.

Alignment can cause the issue as well.
Fixing alignment usually involves ... uncoupling the torsion spring.
