I have been reading some of the posts in this section and have inferred from those posts that it is now necessary to involve a FFL holder in private firearm transactions. I this true?! If so, since when?!

No, it's not true. Some states have laws covering private transfers (Kalifornia), and many states have separate laws for handguns and long guns. In many places, undocumented private transfers are legal.

You can even ship that firearm (as long as its a rifle/shotgun) to a resident of your state. without paper... assuming your state dont have laws against it.
