I got this math problem in email yesterday. It is a 5th grade problem, it is NOT a trick question. It came with a spreadsheet of people who got it right, and the password to open the spreadsheet was the answer so I know I got it right.
Can you answer it? I'll post the correct answer at 5:30 tonight, don't post your answer in the thread, you'll ruin it for anyone that wants to test their mad skillz. Here it is: There are 7 girls in a bus Each girl has 7 backpacks In each backpack, there are 7 big cats For every big cat there are 7 little cats Question: How many legs are there in the bus? |
.
ETA: I did okay in math, but I failed at listening to instructions! |
I've seen it before - the correct answer is the PW to an excel file you can sign.
Easy, unless there's a trick in there somewhere.... like a kitty amputee, or a bus driver they're not telling about.
Cats don't have legs? |
Yeah, I got a really big number |
Your title is no longer Moderator and is now officially Fun Killer. |
I'd say 14 for sure, because it doesn't say the cats are on the bus, or whether there is a driver
Edit. got it, didn't realize we can't post an answer. I am great at algebra and calc, but I can't do arithmetic worth shit.
Hee, hee..... I got the same answers as you though. (....................wait........... you did post a 5 digit answer than ended in ***90, right?) |
i got 9604 cat legs and 14 people legs, assuming no bus driver
7x7x7x7 = 7^4=2401 2401 x 4 = 9604 plus 7x2 - 14 = 9618 total legs on the bus |
girls = 7 legs = 14
big cats = 343 legs = 1372 little cats = 2401 legs = 9604 Answer = legs = 10990 legs + bus driver = 10992 legs / only human = 14 legs / only human + bus driver = 16 ETA: (7 x 2) + ((7 x 7) x 7) x 4) + (((7 x 7) x 7) x 7) x 4) = total legs {where (girls legs) + (big cats legs) + (little cats legs)} |
Assuming each girl has 2 legs AND each cat has 4 legs, AND that each girl brought all 7 backpacks with them, AND there is no bus driver, I have the answer.
but they are in the backpacks |
Who shoves kitties into backpacks anyway? That's as dumb as carrying a chihuahua in a purse.
The girs have backbacks with cats, but where does it say the backpacks are actually on the bus with the girls? |
Failure to the second power is still failure. |
But they are still in the bus. |
^ This. |
His answer is incorrect. Atrophis has the correct answer. |
<Jethro Bodine> If'n my cipherin' is cor-rect the answer is.... <Elly May Clampett> What kinda mean ol' girl keeps her critters in a backpack, anyways? <eta> I think I have the answer...if there's no trick BS like the backpacks full of cats aren't actually on the bus with the girls, an unmentioned bus driver, gimpy tripod feline amputees, one (two???) of the girls is a co-joined twin, etc. |
Yup. To put it more simply: 7 girls x 2 legs = 14 7 girls x 7 backpacks x 7 big cats x 4 legs = 1372 7 girls x 7 backpacks x 7 big cats x 7 little cats x 4 legs = 9604 14 + 1372 + 9604 = 10990 A bus driver is not mentioned so you don't count him, but if it's a smartass question, then it's 10992. |
Do 5th graders know how to follow directions? Cause Arfcom GD sure doesn't......
Correct. |
Another vote for 10990. I used notepad and calc.exe, I hope that wasn't cheating.
It's easier to use burlap sacks.
Except that it doesn't say there's a driver on the bus. It could be parked idle without a driver, or one of the girls could be driving. |
Awwww..... that ain't right. |
The people who came up with 10990 do.
Doubtless this monument of epic failure is why you can be a Texan and yet think chili has beans in it. |
He's covering his bases by offering all the potential solutions so nobody can come back with a trick. Smart way to do it. |
+1 |
<<<<<<<<Note the call sign.
Dang it! |
No, the people who got that answer and DIDN'T POST IT do. What was that about chili and beans again **cough** failure **cough** |
