I maybe getting a new rifle around Christmas time. I am looking at either some kind of Ar-15 carbine, M1A or a FAL.

I like the idea of .308 and its increased power of .223, but on the other hand .223 is less expensive. Also I would think that magazines for Ar-15's are less expensive as well.

What do you think I should buy. Also if you want post pics of your rifle to support your position.

What do you want to do with your new rifle?

+1

Also, what do you currently have?

If you're new to it all, I vote an AR-15 carbine. It's cheaper than .308, handles much better, and is easily enough rifle out to 90-100 yards with a 16" barrel. Throw a red dot on it for teh win.

DSA SA58 FAL .308 FTW.

Mostly target shoot. But also HD. And then if I buy the M1A full size then I could deer hunt with it as well. But then again if I get the AR I can get a 6.8 upper and deer hunt with that.

what are you using it for? Practice? Zombies? Plinking? Fighting off the Chimineese Army?

Then I vote M1A. Then take it to a Highpower match.

Get that AR rifle that can switch mag wells....the name escapes me. Start with the 6.8 upper and go from there

If you are going to get a Scout-type, get the Scout, not the SOCOM. IMO, 16" is just a little short for a .308; the Scout has an 18" barrel.

AR.

.308 at 50 cents a shot is not cheap to feed. .223 is not a great deer round. Nothing will be perfect or do it all. You gotta pick a starting point that will cover most of your bases because none will cover them all.

I don't want to get an Ak as my first EBR. I like a Scout M1A or a Ar-15 carbine the most. FAL's are hard to come buy around here.

AR carbine +1

So you dont own an EBR?

Get an AR!

AR-15 Carbine

Its more modular, better (and cheaper) caliber for HD, and cheaper than a M1A. While a .223 is fairly low on the hunting side, there are quite a few members her that have had great success with Winchester's 64grain Powerpoint round on deer. Plus a new caliber is just a upper away.

Get yourself an AR15 and SBR it.
The 11.5" carbine is my absolute favorite.

I built this one myself, and have no more than $650 into it. (plus $200 tax stamp)

Get the FAL!
Link Posted: 12/5/2007 6:33:47 AM EDT
AR15 over FAL, no doubt about it.
Link Posted: 12/5/2007 6:53:39 AM EDT
For your first battle rifle you must get an AR15. For your second get an M1A. I've had more fun with these two rifles than every other gun I own...

FAL.
And FAL mags are cheaper than AR mags.
Link Posted: 12/5/2007 7:00:39 AM EDT
I voted scout M1A, get a bush rifle if you can. Flash suppressor so much better than the loud and bright muzzlebreak. But after reading that you don't have an AR yet, you need 4 or 5 of those first!
Link Posted: 12/5/2007 10:24:26 AM EDT
Well, if this was "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire," the answer would be fairly clear.

Unless you have money to burn, I don't see the point in owning multiple types of the same rifle. So, assuming you already have an AR15, I'd suggest you get something besides one. A fullsize M1A is in my future. I'd really like to have one, though I wouldn't scoff at an FAL either.

If you don't have an AR15 though, I'd get one of those.

AR in 6.8mm Rem SPC.

FTW
Link Posted: 12/5/2007 10:29:46 AM EDT
7.62x51 is kinda hard to get right now (milsurp).

Not that its ammunition is MUCH easier to get, but a 5.56 carbine would be my choice.
Link Posted: 12/5/2007 10:31:59 AM EDT
I love my M1A, Hawkeye. If you want the ability to swap calibers you could also look at the Robinson XCR. I love my XCR just as much as my M1A. Out of your choices I say M1A.
Link Posted: 12/5/2007 10:44:30 AM EDT
I bought a standard M1A and later got a AR-15 carbine. I love the AR and didn't like the standard M1A. If this rifle is just for shooting around and having fun, I would go with the AR-15 in either rifle or carbine. The M1A is great for target shooting, but fun types of shooting it isn't as fun as a AR. My brother has the SOCOM II and its a beast. With a good sight and acessories it weighed much more then my standard M1A. I found it to unpratical for a fun shooting rifle. If you wanted to go with the a cross get a DSA FAL ST58 with the 16 barrel and folding stock. Though I never shoot one so I don't know what its like. AR are easy to acessorize and the ammo is cheaper which always a plus. So get a AR-15 in my opinion.

There are a lot of fine rifles out there, for fun, SHTF/zombies etc etc. FALs are the current best choice in 7.62x51 IMO, M1A-types are good too.

But nothing beats an AR15 type for versatility. Get a 16" midlength gas AR carbine, you won't regret it.

If you don't have an AR-15 in your collection, Get one! You won't regret it
Link Posted: 12/5/2007 12:03:43 PM EDT
I voted full size AR.

But, the carbine might be a better choice.

The fullsize can be used for DCM/NRA Highpower matches. And it is a good all around rifle.

The carbine is probably best for SHTF use and definitly for home defense.

I have a FAL I built and I'm probably going to make another, and I also have a Garand, but my ARs are my go-to rifles. FALs and M1As don't outrange ARs; their advantage would be for hunting or shooting through cover. The ARs are superior platforms for everything else.

How many calibers are you configured for?
